Landfill rehabilitation is one of the topics under the microscope on the MSc Crop Protection Course organised by the University of Bristol at Long Ashton Research Station. For the past three years Long Ashton and Leigh Woods Environmental (LALWE), a west of England-based company, have supported the course with bursaries for students wishing to pursue projects related to forestry and amenity development, with particular emphasis on landfill rehabilitation research. Research into trends in plant succession (James Riley, 1997/8) and novel crops for landfill (Adam Bennett, 1998/9), and reported in Irish Timber & Forestry March/April 2000, was extended this year by Carl Adey, who investigated the role of organic ameliorates on restored landfill soil.

The Green Spruce Aphid

Green spruce aphid.
The Green spruce aphid (Elatobium abietinum)
is a potentially devasting defoliating
insect of Sitka spruce.

As of late, it has been impossible to pick up a newspaper without being reminded how global warming appears to be impacting on our lives. When we mention global warming people generally think of the recent severe flooding in Ireland and England, however the story does not end here. While any rise in water levels will undoubtedly have a negative impact on our day to day living, many people do not realise that that global warming may also significantly impact on the spread of many animals including insect pests. In recent years there has been a spectacular rise in populations of the green spruce aphid, Elatobium abietinum, thereby classifying this insect as a potentially devastating defoliating pest of Sitka spruce. It is generally believed that milder winters and warmer summers associated with global warming are responsible for this situation, as this insect pest is usually controlled by cold weather.

Overproduction May Affect Profitibility

Overproduction of timber in future years may affect the profitability of Irish plantations. Imports from abroad are a further threat and if we do not offer a quality product then we will lose market share. These and other topics were addressed at the Irish Timber Growers Association seminar in Limerick University.

Gremo's 950 forwarder has been in production now for quite a number of years since it succeeded the 704. It operates in both thinnings and clear fell with equal proficiency and has earned a solid reputation among users on many markets.

Forestry & REPS - the new scheme

Traditional farming and forestry existing side by side.
In future we can expect to see more
scenes like these as land use policy
changes with climatic considerations.

REPS 2 has been announced by Minister Joe Walsh. All transitional arrangements allowing extensions beyond the five years of REPS 1 are now discontinued. The procedure now for both existing REPS 1 farmers, whose five year term has ended, and for new entrants to the scheme is to make an application to join REPS 2. In effect it is a distinct scheme from REPS 1.

Ponsse Launches New Products

Beginning in 2001, the power source for all Ponsse's production models will be a Mercedes-Benz diesel engine.

Ponsse Oyj is launching a new product family on cut to length forest machine markets. The product family consists of two different harvester and three different forwarder models.

Europe Needs the forest Industry

Using wood helps to combat the greenhouse effect.

"The forest industry has the key to the future. Production is based on renewable resources and sustainable forestry. This means that the use of wood, paper, bio-fuel and other forest products helps to combat the greenhouse effect. This is the kind of environmentally adapted industry that Europe needs," says Jan Remröd, deputy director general of the Swedish Forest Industries Federation.
