Lecture
Tornado Watch
by
Dr John Tyrrell
University College Cork
This lecture will describe the formation of Tornadoes and their occurrence world-wide with a specific description of tornadoes in Ireland.
Dr. Tyrrell is a lecturer in climatology at U.C.C. (in the Department of
Geography) and has been investigating tornadoes in Ireland since 1997. Some of the results of this research have been published and presented at
international conferences as well as being discussed in a range of local and national media in Ireland.
At present this Irish research is linked to wider European research through TORRO (Tornado Research Organisation), for whom Dr Tyrrell is its Irish co-ordinator.
Dr Tyrrell's wider climate research embraces historical climatology, and this has recently resulted in the publication of the book "Weather and Warfare: a climatic history of the 1798 Rebellion". These historical studies have also resulted in research papers on tornadoes of past centuries in Ireland.
