Kells Heritage Centre & In the Dock Bistro

The former Kells Courthouse. This building was designed by Francis Johnston and dates from the early 1800s. The building of the Courthouse was financed by the Headfort family as a gift to the grateful people of the town. Much as in Local Hero, Burt Lancaster offers the villagers a piano. It has found a new use now as Kells Heritage Centre. It has been gutted and refurbished. The interior is pleasant and well appointed. There are staff available to give advice on attractions in the area.

There are audio-visual displays every forty five minutes and also various artefacts on display from significant periods in the history of the town. There is also a large retail outlet where various souvenirs of the town and crafts may be bought.

In the Dock Bistro

In the Dock Bistro offers a thoughtful and pleasing array of snacks and meals. Food ranges from traditional (?) staples like BLT on toast (€5.50) to more exotic delights - Mozarella & Chilli Bruschetta (€2.95). Bread, soups and confectionery are made on the premises. There is just something about bread that is still warm. There's a wide and appealing range of salads, panini and amazing sandwiches. The Breakfast menu extends from croissant & coffee to Hazelnut and Chocolate Spread pancakes. Coffee's good and the service is prompt and pleasant. There are plenty of chairs but also plenty of customers, as you'd expect, given the quality and variety of what's on offer. No praise is too high for this place; you have to go.
