An Effective Treatment for Winter Depression
The onset of winter with its short dull days brings with it depression, fatigue and weight gain for countless people. Researches have discovered that a significant number of people suffer froth a desynchronisation of their body cycles, particularly during the winter months when hours of daylight are reduced. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is now a recognised syndrome directly related to the lack of light in winter. It is suffered by between five and ten percent of the population, the classic symptoms being severe depression, extreme fatigue, increased appetite - particularly for carbohydrates - and weight gain during the winter months. Although it is still unclear exactly what causes the syndrome, it can be treated successfully with LIGHT THERAPY. Eighty five percent of cases can be relieved within four to five days. Lightboxes are now a well established and recognised medical device for the alleviation of SAD. |
