Christmas card 2002
Left:
after doing Christmas cards for 2000 and 2001 via graphic design,
due to “popular demand” I opted to do another card “by hand”
for Christmas 2002. This is the result! The italic calligraphy was
written in black ink, and then professionally scanned for inclusion,
and coloured chocolate brown in the final CMYK process colour
printed card. I chose to colour the background of the card cream,
and border it with purple. I enclosed the painting (detail, below)
with a circle, tinted the same colour as the calligraphy. |
The
nativity scene (detail, left) was painted using gouache and
detail was added with colouring pencils and with technical pen. The
original painting was reduced for inclusion in the card. |
The verse on the card by U.A. Fanthorpe, which
blew me away when I first saw it, reads:
This was the moment when Before
Turned into After, and the future’s
Uninvented timekeepers presented arms.
This was the moment when nothing
Happened. Only dull peace
Sprawled boringly over the earth.
This was the moment when even energetic Romans
Could find nothing better to do
Than counting heads in remote provinces.
And this was the moment
When a few farm workers and three
Members of an obscure Persian sect.
Walked haphazard by starlight straight
Into the kingdom of heaven.
