The recent cancellation
of Veronica Mars has been blamed on many things from poor ratings to the
perceived stupidity of its US broadcaster, CW network, but in reality it
came down to one thing: Veronica Mars at high school was a sharp, smart
show with dark plotlines, well-developed characters and witty dialogue.
Veronica Mars at college? Wasn't. In place of those well-developed characters
with their interesting interplay with each other, we were given every American
college cliché.

The show's first season,
which I watched only belatedly after a year of everyone telling me how
good it was and my not believing them, was the closest thing to a novel
I've ever seen on telly — tightly structured, well characterised, compellingly
events-led but also wittily subversive. As the title character, Kristen
Bell put in a superlative performance, and much of the supporting cast
was similarly top notch... Had I been purely watching as a viewer, I think
I'd have given up some time in the middle of season two, certainly by the
close of season three. Perhaps I'm just in love with Kristen Bell and that's
what kept me going. Because what I find interesting about 'Veronica Mars'
is that the thing which attracted us all to it at first — the sense of
momentum, of weight, behind the plots, the brilliance of its pacing and
snappiness of its wit — began to pale fairly quickly. As the second season's
plot about who blew up the school bus zomgs twisted and turned endlessly
in an attempt to last the requisite 22 episodes, and season three collapsed
into a series of anodyne standalones, we all kept watching. This, my friends,
is the power of fannery. And being in love with Kristen Bell.
...Perhaps the clues
were always there. If the great first season had a weakness, it was that
there were no real stand-out individual episodes (cue Niall Harrison: A
Trip To The Dentist!). Because of its essentially serial nature, you watched
'Veronica Mars' for the arc not the episode. When the arc no longer dazzled,
the individual episodes did not pick up. It wasn't that they'd been outshone
by the brilliance of the larger story. It was that they'd never been that
great as 43 minutes of television in isolation. Season 2 and 3 had no way
to go but down. It all ended perfectly, of course — Veronica's need to
solve the mystery damaging the people around her, her father likely out
on his ear as sheriff, her personal relationships shot to pieces, walking
along down a rainy city street. That's noir, baby, and that's what I'm
a fan of.
