Report by John O'Donoghue:
Success for Ireland at Home Countries Conor Nolan conjured up his biggest win ever when he beat Johnny McCarthy in the cadet Home Countries individual final in Scotland on Thursday.he won the thrilling all-irish final 9-21 21-14 21-12. Other Irish success came when Jean O'Sullivan got to the junior girls final where she lost in three sets to Hannah Yardy of England.
The team event were a bit disappointing with none of the Irish teams firing on all cylinders. The cadet boys were a little unlucky to lose a count back in their group.having beaten Scotland 3-2 ,they lost a very close match to Wales but failed on the countback when Scotland beat wales.the cadet girls lost out in a similar way beating Scotland but losing to wales.
Although Linda O'Sullivan played well in the team event the junior girls were unable to overcome strong opposition.the junior boys had a similar story. In the singles however everyone played better Colin Byrne won the consolation event in a hotly contested junior boys event won eventually by Peter Cleminson of England. Jean was unlucky not to win in two before going down in three. Rebecca Lord was beaten in the consolation final Johnny McCarthy was excellent in the earlier rounds with exiting wins over Liam Thomas of Wales 19 in the third and Nicol Craig of Scotland in the quarters 21-13 20-22 21-13. Craig, the Scotish no 1,had beaten Sean Givernaud in the previous round 21-12 19-21 21-14.in the semis Johnny beat England no 4 cadet Tim Yarnell in three sets 12 in the third. Conor had already beaten English no 2 u-12 Adam Bleakly 19,17 but when he came to the q-fs he didn't seem to have much chance since he had lost to Stephen Gertsen Welsh no1 -7-8 the previous day. he produced an inspired preformanceto win 21-18 15-21 21-15 to reach the final. All in all a very enjoyable and successfull event.

Report by B.Fitzgerald:
The Junior Interprovincial Table Tennis Championships played in Cork on Saturday were dominated by teams from Leinster and Munster who shared the 6 titles available evenly between them.

Munster U12 Team

In the U-17 Boys, Munster confirmed their reputation as favourites with a convincing 5-1 victory in the final against Leinster.  As expected, Irish Number1 Junior, Mark White did not drop a match while Gary Noonan was also in outstanding form for the champions as he maintained a 100% record. Munster also collected the U-17 Girls title, beating Leinster in a one-side final. The same Munster trio of Louise Long, Jean O'Sullivan and Linda O'Sullivan will also represent Ireland in the Home Countries Championships in Perth, Scotland next week.

The U-14 Boys title went to Munster while Leinster collected U-14 Girls as well as the 2 titles on offer at the U-12 level.  Leinster won the overall title due to accummulating more silver medals than their Munster counterparts.

On Sunday the AIB Cork Closed Table Tennis Champioships were played at The Lee Maltings and it was a day for the top seeds with Irish Number Ones Brian Fitzgerald, Mark White and Jonathan McCarthy winning titles at Senior, U-17 and U-14 levels respectively. Mark White also won silver in the Senior Event while Jonathan McCarthy was runner up in the U-17s. Louise Long won her first Cork Close Ladies title, beating Linda O'Sullivan into 2nd place while Linda took the U-17 Girls title beating Louise Long in the final.

Report From Louise:
I am just back from the World Schools in France today after having a brilliant time. In our group we had Greece and Slovakia which was a very hard group. We played Greece first and they beat us 7 - 0, and we played Slovakia next who beat us 6 - 1. We beat Israel 4 -3 and then we had to play England which was very close but they beat us 4 - 2 leaving us in 10th place.
The week was not all table tennis though, we had a cultural night on Friday where North Mon and St. Angela's all performed in a ceili which was very embarrassing but we had a laugh. It went down a hit with the audience. We also had a Cultural day on Saturday where we visited a beach, an aquarium and a big shopping centre, this gave us time to mix with all the other countries.

RULE CHANGES
Unless otherwise stated these changes will take effect from 1st September 2000
Laws
  1. The ball has a diameter of 40 mm and a weight of 2.7g. (This change will take effect from October 1st 2000. From that date the 40mm ball must be used in international competitions but Associations may, at their discretion, continue to use the 38 mm ball for domestic competitions.)
  2. A player obstructs the ball if he, or anything he wears or carries, intercepts it when it is moving towards the playing surface and has not passed beyond his end line, not having touched his court since last being struck by his opponent. (The new wording is in bold)

THE 40mm BALL
Letter from the ITTF to ITTA
During the World Championships in Kuala Lumpur, the ITTF General Meeting voted to use the 40mm ball in all ITTF tournaments from October 1, 2000. This includes, among others, the World Championships, Olympic events, Pro-Tour events and Open International Tournaments. It does not include events not controlled by the Ittf, such as your club and league matches and national tournaments. We encourage you to continue using the 38mm ball, e.g. in lower leagues and for young players, for a certain time in order to help suppliers to reduce their stocks and to achieve a smooth transition from 38mm to 40mm balls.

There will still be a large quantity of 38mm ball in supply chain in October, 2000 and it is not the intention of the ITTF to cause the suppliers to lose money by not being able to sell them. The suppliers are all in the same table tennis family with us, and it is in the interest of all of us to help clear the stocks in the clubs. The ITTF will keep the 38mm ball approval list for your guidance for at least 3 years.
With Kind regards: Dr.J.R.Harrison, Chairman ITTF Equipment Committee.

WEST CORK SCHOOLS' CUP IN TABLE TENNIS and THE GOLEEN JUNIOR OPEN, West Cork Ranking.Complete Article

Quick Review of The Welsh Open...
The tournament was superb, the Irish Team stayed in the accommodation within the sports complex itself which was very handy for resting between matches as well as enabling us to sleep late(ish) even on tournament days... Damien Lynch certainly took advantage of this!

In the Mens Singles, I got out of my group in 2nd place and lost a close match with Adam Robertson of Wales in the 2nd Round, score 19-21, 21-14, 21-16. Damien, Alan and Mark were all placed in very difficult groups and went into the Consolation event where Alan went 2 rounds.
The Mens Singles event was won by Magnus Molin of Seden, Europen Junior Champion of 1996. In the ladies, Brioni Lane did well to come out of her group, but also came unstuck in the 2nd round when paired up against a very masculine looking Belgian girl...who perhaps should have been tested for doping.
Linda lost in her group in a very close match with another Belgian girl, which condemned her to the Consolation event as well. The ladies was won by an extremely unappealing Dutch woman who I would dare any man to take on in a wrestling match, seems to be a common theme among top lady players in this report!

Quick preview of the Worlds... The Mens team is Colum Slevin, Brian Fitzgerald and Damien Lynch. In our Group we have India, United Arab Emirates and Turkmenistan as our opponents. I will report on our succeses in a couple of weeks and if anybody wants any presents brought back from KL, contact me quick!!
