West Cork Open 2005

The West Cork Open Celtic Table Tennis Championships 2005 were played in Dunmanway with players travelling from all over the province including Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary and Cork. West Cork was well represented in all nine-age categories.

Kinneigh Club players were to the fore and a performances from Shane Foley saw him awarded the bronze medal in the U10 age group, club-mate Trevor Horgan finished 4th and Sean Hennessey accumulated enough points with his 5th place finish to top the Munster U10 Boys Rankings for the season. Tadgh Williams from Skibbereen also played well to finish 6th and becomes the first Skibbereen player to finish with a top 10 Munster Ranking (6th). Declan O'Brien won the event from Ballincollig beating David Cooney also from Ballincollig in the final. Eoin Barlcay from Skibbereen beat Connor Blunt from Kerry in the Plate final.

Kinneigh also picked up another bronze in the U10 Girls with another consistent display by Amy Buttimer who finished ranked No.3 in Munster. Ellen O'Donnell from Bantry playing in her first Munster event reached the semi-final. There she was beaten by the eventual winner Aisling Healy (Beech Hill) who beat Becky Dineen from Meenkilly, Co. Limerick. Local Dunmanway girl Patricia Murray won the Plate final beating Ciara Glenn.

Scott Shellard from Beech Hill TTC in Cork won his third U12 Boys Munster Ranking in a row beating David O'Shea from Thurles TTC in the final. Alan Keane from Bantry playing in his first Munster Ranking played well to reach the top 8. Cathal Carroll also from Bantry won the Plate final beating Cillian McCaffrey from Skibbereen.

The U12 Girls title went to Sinead Hennessey from the local Kinneigh Table Tennis Club. Sinead is the only Munster player to win all four provincial rankings this season and was presented with the new U12 Perpetual Shield donated to the WCTTA by the Kinneigh Club who also donated the new West Cork Boys U12 Shield. Sinead beat Naomi McCarthy from Abbeyfeale Co. Limerick. Lisa Cronin from Kinneigh TTC beat Emer O'Shea from Bantry in the Plate Final.

The U14 Boys in a very competitive event which has been brought to life with the resurgence of table tennis coming out of Thurles. Gary Houben is undoubtably the new star of Munster table tennis with a double victory at the Ballincollig Open earlier this year he followed it with his second double when he beat club-mate Tony Leahy in the U14 final and Conan O'Hara in the U17 Final. Thurles team mate also played out the U17 Plate Final with Cillian O'Hara beating Thomas Cagill. The U14 Boys Plate final saw Shane Edgeworth from Bantry beat Noel Gillan from Beech Hill.

The U14 Girls final was the fourth match up between U12 Champion Sinead Hennessey and the more experienced Evelyn Mullane from Beech Hill. Evelyn won the match and secured here No.1 Ranking for this season.

The U17 Girls competition saw some very close matches. Defending champion Emma Jane Helen from the Kinneigh Club went into the event as the favourite but with a number of girls keen on taking the West Cork's girl crown she started poorly and was severly pushed by Ballincollig Open Champion Clare O'Callaghan in the Semi final stage. The final between Katie McSweeney and Emma Jane Helen was very close and edgy with both girls feeling the pressure. However it was Emma Jane's experience that finally pulled her through to win her second and last West Cork Open Junior Girls' title. Emma Jane Helen who retires from the junior ranks at the end of the season will collect her remarkable 8th Munster Junior Cap when she plays her last match as a Munster Junior at the Interprovincial Championships at the end of this month.

Emma Jane Helen was in action once again in the U19 Mixed event which came down to the Kinneigh Club rivals Emma Jane and Alan Hurley. Emma Jane gave Alan a good game but he proved too strong for her and collected his first ever U19 West Cork Open Title.
