The Research & Development facility for the BBC is comprised of a mixed Unix and NT site. There are approximately 200 users on a primarily Unix server platform with 200 desktop and 100 laptop clients using NT 4 integrated on it. The support team consists of 6 staff – 2 mainly Unix specialists, 2 Windows support, myself as the Windows specialist and a team manager. My primary projects on starting with the BBC were to upgrade the version of Systems Management Server (SMS) from 1.2 to 2, look at implementing an Exchange server and plan a strategy for migrating to Windows 2000. To date the SMS software has been upgraded, the Exchange server is still in discussion stage – with an alternative in place at the moment at my behest of MDaemon (http://www.deerfield.com) and an upgrade path to Windows 2000 is almost complete, the only outstanding issue being suitable software to allow access to the Unix shares.
