Raphoe Tidy Towns Community Employment Project

Raphoe Tidy Towns Community Employment Project (FAS)
commenced in 1991 with just two workers but this has expanded over the years and at present (July 1999) we have fifteen workers and one supervisor.

These workers provide a town cleaning service and general maintenance to all green areas. They are also involved with all the Churches and two national schools and also the playgroup. In these establishments they provide the services of general maintenance, classroom assistants and secretarial work.

We have entered the National Tidy Towns Competition annually since 1990 and our results have improved steadily over the years.

One aspect of our Project is historical research into the town of Raphoe and surrounding areas. Over the past two years we have been collecting historical information, obtaining this from sources such as libraries, archives and also talking to people about their recollections of the town in years gone by. This has proved to be most informative, interesting and most of all humourous as some of the tales have to be heard to be believed.....

We have already obtained a substantial amount of information relating to the history of the four churches, the various National Schools which have existed in Raphoe in the past and present, the Royal School, the Vocational School, the town itself and it's various historic buildings, both religious and secular, the personalities, past and present.

If anyone would like to contact us with any relevant information which would be of help to the historical research, we can be contacted on 00353-(0)74-45692 at the Diamond Office, Raphoe, Co. Donegal, Ireland.
