Leaving Certificate Subject Options

Senior Curriculum
For the Leaving Certificate students usually take seven subjects.
IRISH, ENGLISH and MATHEMATICS together with options from the following: FRENCH, GERMAN, GEOGRAPHY, HISTORY, PHYSICS, APPLIED MATHEMATICS, CHEMISTRY, BIOLOGY, AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE, ACCOUNTING, BUSINESS ORGANISATION, HOME ECONOMICS (SOCIAL & SCIENTIFIC), ART, CONSTRUCTION STUDIES, ENGINEERING, TECHNICAL DRAWING.

All subjects are offered at both Ordinary and Higher Level.

The Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme
Senior Cycle pupils are offered the Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme, a new European Community backed education and training initiative. Those taking this programme follow the Leaving Certificate Syllabus in at least five subjects to include.

(a) Irish

(b) Two subjects from designated groupings

(c) A modern continental language (French or German)

(d) At least one other approved Leaving Certificate subject

(e) Special modules in Enterprise Education, Preparation for Work and Work Experience

The Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme places special emphasis on new technology through project work to be undertaken in the technological subjects chosen. Work experience of a minimum of four weeks duration per annum is also an integral part of the programme. The European dimension in education is emphasised particularly in the area of language, technology, work experience and vocational counselling. Students who successfully complete the programme will, in addition to the Leaving Certificate, receive from the Department of Education a participation Certificate indicating the nature of the programme followed.

Modules in Enterprise Education, Preparation for Work and Work Experience are a compulsory element of fifth year studies.

Careers classes are an integral part of the Senior Cycle curriculum. Visits by speakers from a variety of careers and backgrounds together with past pupils taking various third level courses are arranged.
