Strong wills and beliefs of Republican prisoners

Statement from Republican Prisoners, Maghaberry prison

“WE, the Republican prisoners currently incarcerated at the hands of the British government and the pro-British dictatorship who are seated in the Stormont Executive, would like to take the opportunity to address the nationalist/ Republican people of Ireland.

“Because we choose the path of continuing with armed resistance against the British Occupying Forces we have had to face a constant barrage of abuse, not only at the hands of the British war machine, not only at the hands of loyalist paramilitaries but also at the hands of the Provo IRA and Provo Sinn Féin alike.

“It is bad enough that they have chosen a path that has been trodden on before by so-called Republicans who chose to sell out all Republican ideals for the princely sum of a cosy seat in both British and pro-British Irish governments, but they are continually trying to blacken the name of the true members of Óglaigh na hÉireann, and are constantly trying to manipulate the nationalist people of Ireland.

“We urge the nationalist and Republican people of Ireland not to be drawn into this tangled web of lies and deceit. Stand up for your rights as Irish men and women and pursue the goal of a united Ireland.

“Do not allow these dictators to trample over the graves of all the brave men and women who had laid their lives down for their beliefs.

These followers of peace promised the people of Ireland that they would never take their seats in Stormont, they did. They constantly said ‘not an ounce, not a bullet’, they have. There is only one other thing they haven't done, but mark my words, they will and that other thing is the rebirth of the Broy Harriers.

“The Republicans who did not choose the path of surrender have been called many things by the Provisionals. They constantly call us micro groups. This is fine, they too were once a micro group. We are constantly bracketed as dissidents, this too is fine as the Provos were once classed as a dissident organisation. Have they forgotten their history?

“We may not be strong in manpower but we are strong in willpower and we are most of all strong in our belief that Ireland unfree shall never be at peace. We will stride purposely forward until we drive the British Empire back out of Ireland.

“We would ask the nationalist people of Ireland to throw your support behind our struggle and behind the political prisoners both north and south of the British-imposed Border. Stand up and take to the streets and once again state your demands: ‘What do we want” — Political Status’.

“We would like to finish this statement with both a word of thanks and encouragement to our Volunteers and comrades on the ground. We ask that you continue the struggle to rid Ireland of British imperialists.

“We urge you to continue to bring the fight to the doorstep of those British overlords and to hold on to the ideals of all the brave men and women who paid with their lives.”
