Derry picketers defy RUC/PSNION November 30 Republican Sinn Féin held a white-line picket outside the Guildhall in Derry city in support of the political status campaign for political prisoners in Maghaberry and Magilligan prisons. Eight people initially marched up and down with placards and were joined by 30 more as they made an impact on Derry people who also supported a collection for CABHAIR. As the size of the picket increased four jeeploads of RUC/PSNI arriver and proceeded to harass the picketers. They also confiscated collection buckets with whatever money was in them at the time. Following the arrival of the British police a large crowd gathered and heckled them as they tried to curtail the picket. Republican Sinn Féin in Derry were pleased with the turnout and intend to hold another picket on Saturday, December 28 next. |

Shannon war threatTHE use of Shannon Airport by American war planes for the transhipment of military troops to US bases in the Middle East compromises Irish neutrality, the local Cumann of Republican Sinn Féin claimed on November 19. Republican Sinn Féin vice-president Des Long said he objected to County Councillors describing anti- war protesters as "anarchists" in the Clare Champion. “I am a native of County Clare and I lived for years in Shannon so I have an interest in the future of the Airport,” he said. “Nine years ago Republican Sinn Féin protested against the military use of Shannon Airport and we did so again recently because we view such military activity as a threat to our neutrality. “While the Councillors are entitled to defend the military use of Shannon we are voicing our opposition because it is a civilian airport. “If all this military use of Shannon is so normal, natural and traditional why then are some other councillors concerned about Shannon being exposed as " a terrorist target?" “The reality is if we continue to allow Shannon to be used by the American military as a staging post for the proposed war against Iraq, we shall be seen as part of the American war machine. “We do not want such an impression to be created across the world and that is why we say Irish neutrality is being compromised by the use of Shannon Airport for American military activity.” |

IF a measure of the Provisionals' determination to join the British police in the Six Counties was needed you need look no further than the recent comments of their Belfast Mayor Alec Maskey.
The British Crown Forces shot and critically wounded a nationalist man in the centre of Belfast on November 24. Alec Maskey stated on television that he could not condemn the shooting as the injured man may have been armed. He was not armed but Maskey's comments reveal the attitude that if the man was armed and engaged in military action against British power in Ireland he could justifiably be shot.
Maskey, it will be remembered, has already (on behalf of his party) laid wreaths on British war memorials which honour, among others, those who killed Irish freedom fighters . . .
THE miniature listening device pictured above, measuring just 10mm by 40mm, was discovered at a Republican Sinn Féin Ard Chomhairle meeting in Dublin during November. It was planted by members of the 26-County political police and uncovered before the meeting began.
This incident is part of an escalation of harassment by the Leinster House administration, its political police and British Crown Forces in the Six Counties.
