The UUP member and former Lord Mayor of Belfast Jim Rodgers, who took part in a different Poppy Day ceremony in Belfast could barely hold back his lack of outrage at the loyalist show of strength, saying it was “wrong”.
He said it was his understanding that loyalists had been firing volleys on the Shankill on remembrance Sunday for a number of years.
The current Lord Mayor of Belfast, Alex Maskey, was unfortunately unable to attend the Poppy Day ceremonies — as he was in China on a trade mission, thereby saving himself from an awkward position.
However, earlier this year Maskey was in Belfast long enough to lay a wreath at the cenotaph to remember the Battle of the Somme. The week before Remembrance Sunday Maskey hosted a reception at Belfast City Hall for the British Royal Legion where he commended them for their work.
Meanwhile in Derry, Remembrance Sunday was marked by the Mayor of Derry, Kathleen McCloskey of the SDLP, laying a wreath. The party leader Mark Durkan also attended. While the SDLP have frequently attended such ceremonies in Derry in the past this was the first time that an official party delegation took part.
