A spokesperson said: “Conditions in Magilligan are so bad that at one stage black plastic bin liners were given to prisoners to use for toilet needs. Republican prisoners report increasing amounts of abuse and intimidation from prison officers who are targeting them as a response to the alleged recovery of prison staff files in Belfast.
Recent sporadic power cuts in the prison have result in electronic cell doors remaining closed, further thwarting the limited periods POWs get out of their cells.
“Republican POW Tommy Crossan was moved to Magilligan against his will from Maghaberry prison at the start of October 2002 — an enforced integration with sex offenders and criminals. This move was motivated by a blatant NIO agenda to prevent Republican prisoners associating at Maghaberry and a further attempt at criminalizing Republican POWs. Tommy Crossan has become a victim of the inhuman conditions within Magilligan and has steadfastly demanded to be returned to Maghaberry. Republican Sinn Féin are continuing to fight a media blackout on the issue.
“The plight of those incarcerated within the walls of the H-Blocks of Magilligan prison should surely concern all right-thinking people.”
