ALMOST four years after the murder of lawyer Rosemary Nelson, the English policeman imported to lead the investigation has stepped down, signalling an end to attempts to find her killers. The Deputy Chief Constable of Norfolk, Colin Port, confirmed to the media on November 29 that he was stepping down from the investigation.
Rosemary Nelson was killed by a sophisticated bomb attached to her car in march 1999, six months after she gave evidence before the US Congress of the threats and intimidation that lawyers in the Six Counties, including herself, received from the Crown Forces there.
Suspicions of Crown Force involvement in her murder were so strong that the European Parliament called for a full inquiry the month after her killing and the US Congress moved to cut funding to the RUC.
To give an air of ‘impartiality’ Colin Port and other English detectives were brought in to lead the investigation, however RUC members were also involved.
With the fourth anniversary of the killing coming up next year, Port has withdrawn back to England. No one has been charged with her murder and none of the RUC members accused of threatening her before her death have been charged.
Little surprise that Rosemary Nelson's brother, Eunan Magee, should say that he believed the investigation was being wound down: "That is the indication we have been getting for the last year. We have seen that is the trend. Even though we expected this, there is still a sense of disappointment.”
Committee for the Administration of Justice (CAJ) spokesperson, Paul
Mageen, also said that Port’s withdrawal “appeared to mark the end of the
investigation:.
“No one has been brought to justice and there are many unanswered questions
on her death and allegations of security forces involvement,” he said.
