|
REPUBLICANS learned with sadness of the death in Galway on November 18 of Murt Qualter, Ballybane, Galway city and formerly of Athenry who died in the University College Hospital. He was 67.Murt came to prominence in the 1957 general election in the 26 Counties when he stood as the Sinn Féin candidate in South Galway. He polled over 2,000 votes. He was a noted and eloquent public speaker.
The following year he stood again in a by-election in the same constituency and increased his vote by over 80% to almost 3,800. His comrades in the Curragh Concentration Camp and Republicans generally were greatly heartened by this result.
Murt was a brilliant young man who had made his way by scholarship through secondary school and university, securing a first class honours degree in ancient classics. He went on to become a secondary teacher in Achill Island and later in Dublin.
In the early 1980s he secured a post in Galway Regional Technical College and resumed his membership of the Athenry Cumann of Sinn Féin, taking part in all activities.
In 1986 that Cumann, at Murt's proposal, was one of the first to give its allegiance to the reorganizing committee of Republican Sinn Féin, following the crisis Ard-Fheis of that year.
He continued with his activities and will be remembered for a well researched public lecture he gave in the Atlanta Hotel, Galway in 1991 on the part played by his native county in the 1916 Rising.
While continuing to attending the Easter commemoration ceremony each year at Donaghpatrick Cemetery, Headford, his health gave cause for concern and he took early retirement from his teaching post.
Republicans were prominent at his removal to the Church of the Assumption, Athenry. Present were Ruairí Ó Brádaigh, Uachtarán, Sinn Féin Poblachtach, Seán Kenny, Gurteen, Brendan Madden, Loughrea, John Clarke, Craughwell and Conchúr Ó Brádaigh, Castlegar.
In addition Maitiú Ó Brádaigh, Bearna was present at the funeral next day to the New Cemetery, Athenry. Sincere sympathy is extended to his wife Margaret and children Ruairí, Éirene and Úna, relatives and friends.
