We Celebrate World Book Day

World Book Day was a very busy day in our school. All the classes in the school worked hard to prepare for the activities which were planned for this very special day. Our reporters Jill, Jennifer, Derek and Timothy went around to all the classes to find out what they were up to on the day. Here is their diary of the day.

Library Storytime

The pupils in the Early Start coloured beautiful butterflies and gingerbread men. The butterflies were really eye-catching. Their parents came in during the day and read stories to them. They also put on a lovely book display in the hall of all the books they had read.
The infant classes visited the library and read some books while there. They also coloured some beautiful pictures, which they displayed in the hall. Their pictures were based on their favorite fairy tales.
First classes coloured pictures of their favorite nursery rhymes. They also had a storytime and poetry reading.

The second classes were very busy all week preparing their books for display in the Hall. Ms. Meaney's produced wonderful books which they decorated themselves. Ms. McCarthy's 2nd class made books all about spring and wonderful weekends. Mrs. Hedderman's class wrote a review of Fantastic Mr. Fox. Each of the pupils also made books for everyone to read. All the wonderful books were then put on display in the hall. They invited guests in to read their books on the day.
Ms. Horan's class also displayed their handiwork in the hall. They designed their own books and binders. They looked splendid. They also read books to their parents, brothers and sisters and wrote a report on what they had to say about the book. Leonard Browne a bookbinder also visited their class and spoke to them about how books are bound. He showed them some of the tools of his trade. The class really enjoyed the day.

They compared such things as getting to school, homework, uniforms and the subjects they had to do in school. During this discussion the children heard about going to school by boat, going to school in Blackpool and going to school in Scotland.
Mrs. O'Carragáin's class held a poetry reading session with Ms. Harvey's 4th class present. The class read the poems they had written during the visit of the poet Declan Lucey. After the poetry reading they wrote some pyramid poems together. Some of the poems were also included in a special World Book Day email project which involved other schools throughout the country. This project was called World Book Day Poetry Book.
