History
How does it work?
- History
- Thai Massage today is the result of a long
historical and cultural development going back to
the days of the Buddha - 2500 years ago.
-
- The founder of Thai Massage, Shivago Kumar
Bhucca, was a physician to the Theravedic
Buddhist order of monks and nuns in India and a
contemporary of the Buddha. The tradition of Thai
massage has been passed down for generations in
the monasteries because it not only relieved
aches and pains but also allowed the monks to sit
for long hours in meditation. It also contributes
to the suppleness of Thai kick boxers and is used
not only as a warm up exercise but the passive
stretches are used during their healing processes
to help keep toned.
-
- In 1776 the Burmese destroyed most of the medical
texts and literature regarding massage techniques
when they razed the capital Ayuthaya. However, in
1832, King Rama III transcribed the remnants of
the text and transported them to Wat Pho, where
they were engraved into the walls of the
monastery. Today Wat Pho is recognised as the
home of Thai Massage.

- How does it work?
- The Thai Masseur learns his healing techniques
from traditional masters, using principles that
have been validated by thousands of years of
practice. Thai massage is based on the theory
that invisible lines of force run through the
body. Whilst not based on the Chinese meridian
system, it does rely on another system of energy
lines that is quite similar. Thai massage
practitioners use hands, feet, elbows, knees and
legs to stretch, balance and energize the
recipient's body.
-
- No oils or creams are used, the recipient is
fully clothed, and the massage takes place in a
suitable amount of space on, say, a floor or near
a pool. The stretching often takes the form of
assisted yoga, and the massage itself relies upon
the massage therapist kneading the muscles,
applying pressure to accupressure points, and
flushing the toxins and dead cells from the body.
The effects of the massage are immediate and
lasting, both spiritually & physically. Light
clothing should be worn.
