Viewer Review
Tomiki style, glad I bought it., August 10, 1999
A viewer from Kansas City, Missouri
This video is a great tool for students of Tomiki style Aikido. I bought it hoping to get a supplement to my personal training, and it was exactly what I expected. The kata is not presented in a way that a pure novice could execute the techniques simply by watching the video, but it gives a good example of each. It is also helpful for the student who wants to learn the Japanese terms for dojo decorum. I think that it would be nearly impossible to learn any martial art from watching a video, but if that is what you are wishing to accomplish this video is not likely the best choice for you. The techniques are shown briefly, and the little steps to achieve the technique are not shown in detail. This video is however an excellent tool for the Aikido student who wishes to use it as a study guide for Tomiki style Aikido, or the student of another style to get a better idea of what Tomiki Aikido is. I gave it 5 stars because it met and even exceeded what I was wanting from the video.

Excellent Visualization Tool, June 19, 1999
An Amazon.com Customer
As a beginning aikido student, I found this video most helpful in examining techniques (slow motion on my VCR) in detail.
The video demonstrates approximately twenty aikido techniques (several times each).
I recommend it.

Description
Tomiki Kenji was born in 1900 in Japan. As a youngster he became a student of the esteemed Judo master Jigaro Kano - under whose guidance young Tomiki became a superior Judo student. At the urging of Kano - Tomiki undertook the study of Aikido under its founder M. Ueshiba and soon he began to excel in this art as well. By the time Tomiki grew into manhood he was considered one of the most knowledgeable martial arts experts in Japan respected by one and all not only for his knowledge but for his skill as a teacher to whom 1000’s flocked. This video is just a sampling of the great masters skill and is being released as a tribute to a truly great martial artist of the 20th Century.

What a great tape!!, December 18, 2001
Reviewer: Michael C. Riehle (see more about me at Amazon.com) from Stockton, CA
There is a label on the tape warning you about the quality of the older footage. Ignore it, open the tape, watch it. Yes, alright, some of the older footage isn't up to modern production standards and it occasionally damages the presentation of an otherwise brilliant move, but the overall tape more than makes up for these occasional problems. Just the information on O'Sensei and why he started Aikido alone makes it worthwhile. You won't learn Aikido from this tape, but you might learn why you should learn Aikido.

Description
Iaido, the Way of the Samurai Sword, is the art of drawing and using the traditional Japanese sword (katana). Iaido is a non-combative physical and mental discipline formulated in 1932, largely through the efforts of Nakayama Hakudo and Oe Masamichi Shikei. Iaido is a way of self-cultivation through self-realization and spiritual development. The samurai swordsman, through his skill, has the capability to kill, yet does not. He has no conscious intention to harm others and wields the sword only to master his "self."

Here Nomura Sensei instructs on basic Iaido skills and demonstrates a variety of Iaido systems, including Shoden, Chuden, and Shindo Munen Ryu. The forms are shown in sitting and standing positions. Every form (kata) in each system is demonstrated from different angles accompanied with explanations to clarify the movements. Also included are free-style movements and pair work.

Viewer Review
Excellent work!, August 3, 2003
Reviewer: Daniel Reid from San Francisco, CA, USA
Overall, I was very impressed with this DVD. The swordsmanship of Sensei Nomura and her students is impeccable, and I appreciated the level of detail presented in such a compact format. That being said, this type of DVD is not intended for beginners; no book or video can replace the training one would receive from a qualified sensei. However, as a supplement to dojo training, this DVD is invaluable.
My only complaints are some minor problems with photography and sound, particularly in the scenes shot on the beach. These flaws don't detract from the overall quality of the performances, though; the beach scenes give a nice change from the usual dojo setting. The guitar music is very nice as well.
