This years gala was held on May 19th in Northside Pool. There was a great air of excitement in the pool with about 9 schools represented between boys and girls.  Extra personnel are brought in for the day to act as timekeepers and keep scorecards.  Certificates are presented after each final, with a fanfare as the swimmers parade to the podium.  We entered two teams, 7 boys and 3 girls.  All of our swimmers beat their own personal best times, and achieved certificates.   One of our girls came third in the U 11 backstroke and one of our boys came first in the U 13 breaststroke.

Well done to all!

"My first Gala was on the 11th May 1998.  I was really excited about doing it so when the day came I was a bit nervous.  When my race came I did not feel like it at all.  But despite this, I got first place in Northside and I enjoyed it.

My second Gala was the Finals of the first Gala.  This was held in Ballymun Swimming Pool.  I didn't enjoy it so much because I was not used to the pool.  I tried my best and in the relay race we won Bronze.  So I was pretty happy about that and I enjoyed it also.  It's not always about winning - you have to be a good winner as well as a good loser."

Santry Sports. Dublin Schools Athletics in Morton Stadium, Santry.

This year our school entered the Field Events for the first time.  On Tuesday 19th May children took part in High Jump, Long Jump, Hurdles ans Long Distance.  The team managed to bring home 3 medals.

S Baker

Silver Medal - U. 13 1/2 High Jump

M Baker

Bronze Medal - U. 11 High Jump

C Flanagan

Bronze Medal - U. 13 1/2 600M.

N Staunton was unfortunate not to get a Bronze Medal in the Hurdles.  While we didn't bring home any medals from the Track Events held on Tuesday 26th, five of our eight sprinters got to the semi-finals.  This has been our best year ever in this competition, and our first medals in almost 20 years.  We would like to say a special thank you to Ms. Joanne Sharkey (a teacher from the Junior School) and Mr. Sean Leonard (our Fás worker who helps out with PE in the school) who helped to train all  our athletes along with Mr. Shane Loftus.  Well done to all.

Mrs. H. Noble.

Fancy a Race?? Bet we'll win !!
The Girls and Boys Athletics teams, which took part in the Cross Country Running and Santry Sports.

"Schools all over Dublin came to Santry for a competition.  It is on once a year.  There are things like sprints, long jump, high jump and 600M racing.   At the start of the competition there is a parade where schools have to hold their banners.  The crowd cheers for their schools, and mothers and fathers cheer for their sons or daughters.  The competition goes on for four hours.  This year our school did well and we had a great day.  We would like to say thanks to:  Mr. Loftus,  Mrs. Noble,  Mr. Leonard,  Ms. Sharkey  and to our own teacher, Mrs. Gillespie, for letting us take part."

"My name is C Flanagan.  I was asked to tell you about Santry.  There were around 12 people taking part from our school on the 19th May.  There was the Hurdles which N Staunton done, the High Jump which the 2 Bakers did, the 600m which I done, and got a medal.  The 2 Bakers got medals as well, a Silver and a Bronze.  I got a Bronze medal as well.    We have two more things to do - sprint and relay racing on the 26th May.  This was the first time anyone from our school won a medal in 21 years."
