Each year the school enters teams in both the senior and junior grades. Although success has evaded the school in recent years a keen interest is maintained by both the students and the teachers. With so many other distractions, it is heartening to watch the pupils excel for the various clubs in the area, which include Inisfaíls and O'Tooles.
The school teams take part in both the Cumann na mBunscol and the Fingal leagues. There is a healthy rivalry between the area's schools which often leads to entertaining, if not always, beautiful football.
A great debt is owed to Mr. Linnane (Sports Co-ordinator), Ms. Sheilds (Girls), Mr. Amphlett and Mr. Loftus (Boys). With their enthusiasm and dedication it cannot be long before O.L.I. Darndale once again scales the dizzy heights of success. Watch this space!!!!!
Mr. S. Loftus.

Each year our school enters children in the Primary Schools Sports competition in the Morton Stadium in Santry. For many years, success has eluded us in these competitions but this year we have come away with 3 medals. You can read all about it in our new page:
Swimming classes have been held for the children since 1987. We are lucky enough to have three fully qualified swimming teachers on the staff ~ Mr. Keating, Ms. Rush and Ms. Hooper We now have one other teacher involved as well ~ Ms. Gilliland. In the first year, 3 sessions a week were run but unfortunately two of these had to be dropped because of cost. Now we have just one session on a Thursday from 3.00 to 4.00 in Northside Swimming Pool. Each year we enter swimmers in the Dublin Corporations' Swimming Gala in Northside Swimming Pool. About 9 years ago we got sponsorship from our school's bank, Allied Irish Bank, to purchase swimming togs in the school colours. No matter how well they do in the competition, we have the best turned out team.
"Darndale swimming team are the best. There are a lot of good swimmers in it - especially me !!" - A Merriman. | "I started to go swimming because I thought if I was good at it I would be able to go into competitions" ~ J Fogarty. | "I really like going swimming with the school. I don't know how to swim yet but I'll learn soon" ~ L Fitzpatrick. |
"I go swimming because I think it's a great opportunity to meet new people and to learn different strokes" ~ C Hurley. | "I like swimming because we use floats and we swim backwards and forwards. Sometimes we go down to the six foot" ~ D Wilson. | "Swimming is a good sport, I enjoy it with Ms Rush and the other teachers. We go every Thursday after school at 3.00 and we only have to wait 5 minutes for the bus" ~ V Brady. |
"I started to go swimming because I thought it was a great opportunity. My swimming teacher is Mr. Keating. He taught us how to do many kinds of strokes. My most favourite is backstroke. I can really do backstroke the whole width of the pool" ~ N Gorman. | "I joined swimming to learn how to swim. Ms. Hooper taught me how to swim. It is a very good hobby. I enjoyed nearly all of the swimming lessons" ~ D Dyer. | "I go swimming because it is my sport. And why do I go with the school? - because I get to learn more about back stroke and I enjoy it" ~ C Thai Thanh. |
When I first started swimming with the school, I was afraid to even duck my head into the water. Gradually, I learned to use a float and kick my legs. Soon after that I learned how to use my arms and how to do the back stroke. Then we practiced the breast stroke. Then we were brought down to the deep end to swim lenghts and practice diving. After all that practice I was entered into the Swimming gala. I am now able to swim all because of the school swimming sessions" ~ D Mc Cluskey. |

Cross Country Racing took place over a 6 week period in December and January. The Boys school in Baldoyle hosted the event. Six teams from our own school were entered and three of the teams won medals - U. 10 Girls, U. 12 Girls and U.13 Girls. C Flanagan who captained the U.13 girls team won all her races. The teams were looked after by Mrs H. Noble and Mr D. Amphlett. We celebrated our Cross Country success by holding a presentation of certificates to all the children who did the school proud, both winners and non-winners. Inspector O' Brien and Sergeant Donal Waters from Coolock Garda Station presented the certs and afterwards guests, children and parents attended a 'light reception'.
This is an account of the Cross Country racing.
"Hello. We are here to tell you about Cross Country Racing. We do it to support our school. It is fun. We go every Tuesday. We are not the only people out of the school who go - there are lots of others. Mr. Amphlett and Mrs. Noble are our trainers and they come every Tuesday with us.
The running is in Baldoyle. There are boys and girls teams and they are under 10, 12 and 13 and a half. We run round a football pitch. We get a minibus to and back from Baldoyle. We got the best results this year, better than we ever got in Cross Country Racing."

A Basketball League was played at lunchtimes on Thursdays, and there was plenty of open friendly competition. Third classes were introduced to basketball skills while 5th's and 6th's had the opportunity to impress the supporters !! The games were played in a sporting manner and medals were presented to the winners. Nobody seemed to mind giving up their lunchtime for Basketball, and some of the older children were experts at 'coaching' the 3rd classes. Ms. M. Docherty. |
