With all the talk about warp rolling etc., I think it might be beneficial
to describe how I teach pilots defensive maneuvers in the training arena.
1. I tell them there are 3 basic moves. Scissors, Barrel Roll, and Split-S.
2. Then I demonstrate each move to them by having them follow me with
my smoke turned on.
3. We then discuss under what situations to use each technique, and how
by combining techniques you can create an infinite variety of defensive
moves.
Sometimes we get into specifics, and to be honest I always tell them
that the most effective counter move is probably the rolling scissors (scissors
combined with barrel rolls).
The point is many new pilots have no clue about "warp rolls",
they are just doing what they can to avoid the situation. It's not the pilots
fault that there are internet lags, or the smoothing code is not quite perfect,
or a planes roll model may be off. You can't expect a pilot to fly straight
and just let you shoot him now can you? :)
Anyway, just thought you guys might be interested in how I, and I assume
other trainers, attempt to teach defensive moves to new and some experienced
players as well. So if you are seeing more guys using these defensive techniques,
then I guess I feel good the message is getting through.
I know when I am on someone's 6 and they are employing these moves and
I see warps, its better to just let them go and find someone else to sneak
up on so you get a good clean shot.
