Mosquito as a fighter?

I was wondering what people thought of the Mosquito as a fighter. Have you tried it? What was your experience?

I was up last night in a P-51, and I saw a DH98. I dove to attack, and leveled out on him at over 400IAS. I came in on him, and right as I opened fire, I saw tracers! Because of my high speed I hadn't realized it was a headon pass - SPLAT I collided after taking some pings.

Anyways I was inspired by this, so I grabbed a DH98 for some air-to-air. I did some "experimenting" i.e. trying to turnfight, on the first couple of hops, so I had 4 kills and 2 deaths.

Then I got smart and tried it as an energy fighter - WOW. The guns are killer, then turn rate isn't bad at all (equal or better than P51 at about 200ias), and the speed is outstanding - every plane that tried a stern chase had to give up.

Anyways I got 5 kills on the last flight, so the overall was 9 kills, 3 deaths with some stupid flying mixed in. A pretty good fighter plane I'll say, possibly in the "dweeb" class.

The only bad things I found were the high speed rudder response. It was very hard to kick rudder for a snapshot on a breaking bandit.

All the other control responses were fine at all speeds, and the behavior at stall was very gentle. There was no tendency to snap roll in an accelerated stall.

Any other experiences guys?

It's a great plane. I don't know about using it as a pure fighter though. Most of my kills have been surprise kills since when they see me, all they do is start turning hard. It's roll rate is no very good and it compresses too easily. I use it purely as hit and run plane. Good draggin plane too.

Big difference between a dogfighter and night-fighter/interceptor.

Interceptor is loaded for bear and should be good against big lazy targets. You can shred B17 to pieces fasta nd far out and you have one spare engine in case otto gets you.

Against a fighter you can start spraying cannon shells from long distance. Just do not follow it into scissors or try a second pass.

Yep its untouchable if you keep an eye out. I got into several dogfights last nite, even pulling the hammerhead stall and vertical HO, against a P-38! I doesnt dive much faster than 450 mph so its best to just nose over a little and let them chase you in level flight after you pick up speed. You have to line up pretty well because the rudder is ineffective at high speed. Gun are amazing with a huge load. Range is amazing though 100 fuel dispays as 75% in the cockpit. Pitch trim working fine now and autopilot is functional as well. I'm going to be using it for hunting behind the lines.

I have not yet tried online the fighter version myself, but it's performance hasn't been much, from what i have seen.

In R0, Mossie's level speed appeared to limit to 300mp/h, maybe because of the trim bug. After a dive it start climbing until the speed was somewhere at 300.

I have chased several mossies in my 109G, caught them easily. Seemed slow, and when they finally started to turn (if they even saw me, 6 view is not so good), they make a huge target, huge and stable.

Fast mossie came to my 6. At D10 started flat scissors, mossie closed. At some D2 started rolling, with some rudder. I guess he tried to follow, because he splashed immediately to water.

Mossies poor visibility and roll rate are the main factors, IMO, making it a lousy dogfighter.

Maybe things will change, as it's pilots become better, but so far mossie appears to be harmless (as a fighter).

Waddayathink? (Do I have to find a cover..)
