I enjoy flying both Yaks. The only things I would suggest are to have
less than 30% fuel when you engage hostiles (Yaks are *very sluggish* when
loaded with 50%+ fuel) and avoid *Spit5s* like the plague!
You wont see *Quake furball uber pilots* fly the Yak with much success.
Its mostly for the dedicated, disciplined type.
Love that rear view :^)

Yes, i've had some success with it. "Horrible" is not how i'd
describe the Yak9, more like "mediocre". It's reasonably fast
(just a hair slower than the SpitIX at the lower alts), has ok climbrate,
ok turnrate, and the horrible rollrate that you mention is only at the higher
speeds, as a result of stiffening ailerons. At below 312 mph (500kph) the
roll rate is actually quite good. One thing to keep in mind is that with
the 1x20mm & 1x 12.7mm the 9 rewards good gunnery, & conversely
punishes bad gunnery/shot selection. While this is certainly no uberplane,
it can be quite effective in 1942-'43, imho.
Like all Yaks, i find it particularly effective vs the Me109 series at
lower altitudes... something they were quite specifically designed for.

Message: I like the YAK-9 and YAK-3. The YAK's guns are only marginally
better than a 109F or 109G, due to the fast rate of fire and heavy shell
of the single spinner-mounted cannon. Although it seems a bit tougher than
a 109, it is not what I would call real durable (but then, I also fly the
FW and Corsair). The plane's roll rate does suffer at speed, and its speed
suffers above 5 Km. The YAK-9 (and to a greater extent, the YAK-3) have
extremely good acceleration, a result of the combination of very light weight
and good power. This allows you to sucker a victim into a slow turnfight
and then suddenly speed up and switch to energy tactics, quite the reverse
of what most planes can do.

- Hi guys
-
- Can anyone tell me what's the best set to these airplanes? Guns convergence,
- fuel and trimming?
- thx!

- Set convergence to the distance of the target, carry just enough fuel
- to get home and trim to your present speed. Wa-la!
-
- Just kidding. Convergence depends on your style, the plane you're
- flying, and your intended target. In a slower quick turning plane
- like an A6m most prefer a convergence 300 or less. Some use 100 for
- close in shots with a plane light on guns like the KI-43 or the Yak.
- For a fast non-turner with heavy guns and for Buff hunting or strafing
- I like 500. In a 262 Ihave no idea. It launches the shells like a
- rainbow no matter what I use I can't hit squat.
-
- On fuel the default 35% is good for most. If you expect instant
- combat take 20% or less to lighten your plane so it turns better.
You
- don't want too much fuel on board when you engage, it slows you down.
- It depends on the plane too. An A6m goes a long way on little fuel,
a
- FW sucks it down like a tour bus. In a B-17 due to it's huge fuel
- tanks, you can fly for over 90 minutes on 35%. A B-25 with 100% fuel
- might not fly that far.
-
- On trim though, hit X to set your trim to the speed you're at. Some
- find a nice average speed like 200 and trim at that speed then leave
- it alone, others constantly retrim as they change speed.
-
- Hope this helps.

- Heya scavin.
-
- Convergence: All guns are in the nose, so convergence matters less.
I set it to 300 and forget about it.
-
- Fuel: I take 60% in the yak-3. The yak-3 burns fuel fast - 30 secs
per %, so 60% is enough for 30 minutes.
-
- Trimming: I trim this plane a lot. And you need to fly her a lot to
get the most out of her. I don't know any plane that flies as well as the
yak-3, but it takes a lot of manual trim to keep her happy.
-
- If you would really like to learn these planes, I'd recommend you fly
for gold (right now) and ask one of the VVS guys for help. Here's a short
list of yak

are glad to see people flying them.
