SCHOOL SPORTS

Our school is very dedicated to sports, especially rounders and Gaelic football. Below you will find all you need to know about our school football teams and the great success of the rounders teams.

ROUNDERS

Eighteen years ago, rounders was started in the school by Mr Dowling. He has been our trainer since then. In 1990 the breakthrough came when the Heath Area U-13 Boys' team won their first Laois title. The same year they won the Leinster title. From then on they've been very successful.

GAELIC FOOTBALL

Heath Gaelic Football Club Crest

The Heath GAA club was founded in 1888. In those days, the club was known as St. Patrick's. The club colours were scarlet and grey. Nowadays they are black and amber. The Heath GAA has produced some brilliant players including Shane Hennessy, David O'Hara, Michael Clancy and Michael Lambe who have all achieved the dream of playing in an All-Ireland Minor Football Final. Other well-known past-pupils are Denis Lalor (who not only starred on the Laois Senior team but also won two Railway Cup medals with Leinster.) and Chris Bergin. Chris played for the Laois Minors who won the All-Ireland in 2003 and he also received the Irish Examiner /TV3 Young Player of 2003 award. In 2004 he made the Laois Senior panel.

In the 1998-99 season, both our Boys' and Girls' teams qualified for the semi-finals of the Laois Primary Schools Gaelic Football Tournament. Unfortunately the girls, captained by Danielle Keane, were beaten by Stradbally, another local school team. The boys were more successful. In the final they beat Ballyadams by a point.

The girls had a fairly bad 1999-2000 season (To be honest, they didn't win a match!) but the boys won the Final again. This time they beat Knockmay school from Portlaoise. It was a very hard match and, after extra time, we won by a single point (1-7 to 1-6). Our captain was Ciaran Jones.

Tony Connolly was the boys' captain during the 2000-2001 season. We didn't win a match but we did draw one with Graiguecullen! Tony's twin sister, Ciana, was the captain of our girls' team. We won one match against Sacred Heart school in Portlaoise and we lost all the others. Hopefully both teams will do better next season.

For the 2001-2002 season, our first game in the Cumann na mBunscol competition was against Killeshin in the Heath G.A.A. grounds. It was a very close game and we won by three points. James Nerney was the man of the match. He played a great game in the backs. The score was 8-3 to 6-5. The next match we played was Scoil Bhríde at home. It was a good game but we lost by two goals. We should have won because we missed a lot of chances. The final score was 0-6 to 2-6.

Our next match was away against Ballylinan. It was a draw. The final score was Ballylinan 3-6 and The Heath 2-9. The man of the match was Cathal Whelan. Then we were away again against Clonaslee. We had to stop the game at half-time because we were too good. The score at half time was Clonaslee 0-0 The Heath 2-10. We let the subs play the second half and the score was Clonaslee 1-2 and our subs 1-5.

We played our next match at home and if we lost we wouldn't be in the semi-final. We won by three points. The score was The Heath 2-6, Ballyroan 3-2. The man of the match was Kieran Hyland. We played Killeshin in the semi-final in Stradbally. Kieran Hyland scored the winning point in the last few seconds. The final score was The Heath 3-5, Killeshin 3-4. The man of the match was John Booth.

The final was against Scoil Bhríde in O' Moore Park. A lot of people showed up to watch the big game. We lost by five points. The final score was Scoil Bhríde 3-5, The Heath 1-6. It was a very good game. The man of the match was Kieran Hyland. The captain of all the matches was John Booth. It was a very good season for the School.

In 2002-2003, the girls won the Cumann na mBunscol Division 3 Final. We lost our second match in the league against Ballylinan, but when it came to the final we trampled all over them. Now we're in Division 2. The boys got nowhere this year!

OTHER SPORTS

Other school sports are table-tennis, volleyball, draughts, basketball and running. We have a cross-country competition every year. For the last two years, this has been won by Mark Bell. Mark left the school in June 2000 so maybe some of the rest of us will have a chance now! And the good news is that, in March 2001, the prize was won by Kevin Daly from Sixth Class. Alan Whelan from Fifth Class won the 2002 competition and Kieran Hyland came second. A past pupil of ours, Ian Whelan, is an outstanding gymnast. In January 1998, he was presented with a Gymnastics Award at the annual Leinster Express Awards Dinner. He was the youngest ever recipient.
