Well into the 18th. century , the self-contained community living here was tightly knit by marrigae, being cut off from Waterford City and County by the River Suir and from Co. Wexford by the River Barrow, resulting in an almost medieval lifestyle. political and social continuity meant cultural continuity as well. Intermarriage was very marked in this southern area. These districts also retained a typical pattern of farm-house clustering together which is almost certainly Anglo-Norman in origin. Irish was the language of a third of the inhabitants of the barony of Ida and Iverk as late as 1851. Family fueds and banditry (e.g. freney) were all in evidence
