WEST CLARE RAILWAY
The West Clare Railway was a narrow-gauge line, which linked Ennis to Kilrush and Kilkee. It was for many years the 'lifeline' of the county, but closed in January 1961. A short section of line has been re-laid at Moyasta, 3 miles from Kilrush on the Kilkee road, and railcar trips are run during the peak summer months.

SCATTERY ISLAND (INIS CATHAIGH)
Picture of Round Tower Situated about 2miles from Kilrush, in the Shannon Estuary, Scattery Island is one of Ireland's most significant Heritage Sites. St.Senan founded one of the earliest Christian settlements in the British Isles there, a monastic settlement in the early 6th century.

Since then, the place is steeped in history, having seen invasions by Vikings, Danes, Normans and Cromwellians. It was even mentioned in dispatches in connection with the Spanish Armada of 1588. An artillery battery was constructed during the Napoleonic wars.

It boasts one of the tallest Round Towers at a height of 120ft, and the remains of seven churches can be seen on the Island.

It was inhabited until 1979, when the last residents came ashore.
Since the construction of a new pier, which was opened in 1999, it is easily possible to visit the Island, and regular trips are operated from Kilrush Creek Marina throughout the summer.

In addition, there is a Visitor Centre, situated at the rear of the Marina, where the history student will find answers to many of his or her questions.
