Diploma in Mission Studies

Duration: One year: Sept to May or Jan to Dec
Entry: Open to all

The Diploma in Mission Studies offers an opportunity of study to those who wish to be introduced to, or updated in, the main directions in mission thinking today.

Participants will be able to choose whether they wish to give their study an anthropological or a theological bias. This choice will be reflected in their choice of major essay.

This Diploma in Mission Studies opens up a wide range of issues and approaches to participants. Courses attempt to integrate theological reflection with the insights of cultural anthropology. The Director of Diploma Studies will be glad to assist in the selection of suitable courses.

A central core group of subjects forms the basis for further work:

  • Mission Theology
  • Social Analysis
  • Introduction to Anthropology
  • Cultural Anthropology
  • Inter-faith Dialogue
  • Faith and Revelation
  • Introduction to Theology

Written assessments are undertaken in these core subjects, as well as in a number of other subjects which are chosen from a wide range of topics:

  • Being Christians Together
  • Sacraments of Initiation (RCIA)
  • Doing the Truth: Christian Moral Life
  • Inculturation
  • Ecumenics
  • Anthropology and Faith
  • Israel
  • Prophecy
  • Paul
  • Luke/Acts

There is a wide selection of courses which deal mostly with different aspects of the relation between christian living and cultures. These connect with the ongoing Wednesdays at Kimmage Series.

Participants are encouraged to engage in their own reflection and research in anthropology and theology. They will have contact with a highly motivated and experienced academic staff, who have worked in various cultural contexts. Through personal study and their active participation in class discussions, they will be able to acquaint themselves with the issues of the day.

Tutorial help and spiritual direction are available, if required, and there is access to an excellent library on the campus.
