Lucy originally tried out for the part of Ally McBeal's Nelle Porter. Series creator David E. Kelley didn't think she was right for the role, but he was so impressed by Liu's icy demeanor that he wrote the part of Ling specifically for her. Before joining Ally McBeal, Lucy had been a series regular on Pearl and guest-starred on shows such as ER and NYPD Blue. When she was in college at the University of Michigan, Lucy didn't aim to be an actress. It happened by accident. When she was a senior, Lucy auditioned for a role in a stage production of Alice in Wonderland just for the fun of it and wound up being cast as the lead. In addition to acting, Lucy is also an accomplished artist whose mixed-media photography has been shown in galleries in New York and Los Angeles. When she isn't working, Lucy is an avid rock climber, horseback rider and skier.
She practices the martial art of Kali-Eskrima-Silat (knife-and-stick fighting), skis, rock climbs, rides horses, and plays the accordion.
