ITTA considering appointment of Full Time Business and Performance Managers: ITTA Press 26.06.06
The officers of ITTA have met representatives of the Irish Sports Council and Sports Council for N.I. about the possibility of creating TWO new full time posts within the Association.

The new post-holders, to be funded jointly by the two Sports Councils, will work for the ITTA on an All- Ireland basis and, when appointed, will be extremely beneficial to table tennis.

The proposal was debated at some length at the AGM and approved in principle, subject to its feasibility and viability being demonstrated.

The Board was requested to obtain further information on some aspects of the proposal in advance of final agreement. These included being satisfied on the detail and practicalities surrounding and resulting from it. This is a fantastic opportunity for the Association and for the overall development of the sport in the country.

Discussions are ongoing between the Association and the Sports Councils. Any updates will be posted on this site.

15 Year Old Sensation
Japans fifteen year old, Kenta Matsudaira caused the sensation of the year and one of the greatest upsets in the ten year history of the ITTF Pro Tour on Fri 16th June. In Kunshan, he beat Denmarks Michael Maze in four games in the opening round of the Mens Singles event at the Volkswagen Open China.

Maze was the Bronze medalist in the Mens Singles World Championships in 2005, while Matsudaira won the Boys Singles title at the World Cadet (Under 15) Challenge later last year. He is young enough to defend this title again in 2006.

Even more remarkably, Matsudaira had no coach sitting courtside to give advice between games, while Maze had the highly respected Peter Sartz on the bench.

Excert from Article from ITTF Website Full Article
”In the Hot Seat” this month features ITTF Board of Directors Member Polona Cehovin Susin. She was recently in Lausanne to take part in an AISTS sports management seminar for women.

How do compare the development of women’s table tennis to the development of womens sports within other disciplines?

At the seminar I often felt we were a bit ahead of the others I terms of offering advice on how to tackle various issues in respect to women’s participation in sport. At the same time we’re of course aware that we need to do more in terms of getting more women involved as coaches, officials and empires. In order to do that we need to build up more positive role models who can inspire girls to become involved in our sport. The bronze medal for Belarus at the World Championships in Bremen was good in this respect. The Pavlovich sisters are both very charismatic, they are good looking and they showed a tremendous team spirit throughout the championships.

The ITTF during the World Championships in Bremen decided to provide equal prize money to male and female athletes and for the first time in the history we have two female Executive Vice-Presidents. What has this meant for the general image of the ITTF in the sports' world?

I can see that many other federations look up us now and ask us for advice. Of course it makes us proud that we have set examples that others would like to copy and at the same time it’s a signal that we are a very healthy sports organization. We are moving in the right direction. I am also pleased that the ITTF is doing a great job in terms of promoting sport as a means of providing a series of educational tools for children, teaching them about tolerance across cultural barriers, creating positive role models, etc..

Table Tennis Ireland, Female Player of the Year
Tara FuscoTable Tennis Ireland would like to acknowledge the contribution of all the women players in Ireland and consequently we are presenting Tara Fusco with the first Table Tennis Ireland Player of the Year Award.

Tara admits herself that her domestic season has not been by her high standards her best. But when Tara has been given the opportunity to represent her country her experience has proved to be a significant factor in Irish success this season. The women put in an excellent performance in the 6 Nations and after beating Scotland the Irish team were able to celebrate a Silver medal. Other results included a 3rd place finish in the Premier Division of the British League. In the European Qualifiers Ireland finished 3rd behind Denmark and only narrowly lost to Norway 3-2. Unfortunately the women were not able to play in the World Championships and I am unable to provide a reason.

Tara played for S.C. Urania from Hamburg this season. The team won the 4th Division only loosing 2 matches out of 22 and has been promoted to the German Regional League, one step away from the National League. Congratulations Tara and even though you maybe out of the domestic eye, we here at Table Tennis Ireland would like to wish you the best of luck next season, we hope Tara continues to be the excellent role model she has been for a number of years, for all those up and coming young girls out there around the country.

Educating rITTA
The ITTA Performance Committee held a seminar for coaches over the weekend of the 20th - 21st May. This was certainly the first course I have heard the Performance Committee organise and in my opinion an excellent idea. I believe a number of people were invited as the course was aimed at "persons who may be included in a list of Assistant Coaches/Non Playing Captains for involvement with future Irish squads and teams."

As I am trying to complete the ITTA Level 2 Syllabus that includes the mental, physical and tactical aspects of player and team preparation, this seemed a unique opportunity to glean some relevant information. Our part-time National Coach Colum Slevin conducted the seminar. Colum as nearly everyone in Irish table tennis is our most successful senior player on the International circuit over the last decade.

What with Munster in the rugby final on the Saturday and Bon Jovi fans taking all the available accommodation around Dublin, it was hard enough for two Munster men to leave the hearth and home. But by leaving at 5am on Saturday and staying over night near Naas, Ivan Shorten and myself did manage to arrive in good time and remain for the second day. We also managed to sneak off to watch the second half!

So what ever the seminar was like there were two happy coaches. Thankfully the seminar was full of interesting information and insights into the current state of table tennis. As well as a number of opinions on how the future of the sport may go, with the change over glue in 2008 and Colum fresh from his trip out to the World Team Championships it was a good opportunity to catch up with the recent trends.

The first day kicked off with a run through on basic techniques including variations on the grip, the topspin, flick, block, push and counter-hit. Due to Colum's long experience in the game he was also able to point out some of the progressions in technique from when he was first coached. For someone like me who first started coaching over 25 years ago this was especially helpful!

After an in depth discussion on technique the group moved on to applying that knowledge to tactics. Assessing your opponent and how to counter various styles including short and long pimples. This seemed to be an area that all the coaches expressed an interest in. The group then had the opportunity to have a general discussion before the first day was finished off with a lesson in fighting spirit this one given by the Munster rugby team.

The second morning saw a recap on the previous day with a number of new coaches attending. Colum had put together a number of drills on three areas: Co-ordination, Tactical and Footwork and once again there was a lot of information to absorb. Later on in the day we moved into a small hall where we were first treated to a short impromptu match between Johnny Murphy and Bernard Weiss from Austria. The two of them were just completing their training and Colum used the opportunity to illustrate some of the applied tactics in the game. As there had been a lot of interest in the use of pimples it was an ideal opportunity as Bernard uses short pimples on his backhand.

After running through a number of drills, Colum demonstrated a number of multi-ball techniques and how they could be applied to training. All the coaches then had a go at firing in balls at each other. The day quickly came to an end and I was delighted to be able to get some video footage to go along with my reams of notes and handouts. With all this in hand I am looking forward to applying some of it within the Level 2 Syllabus.

It would of course be easy to criticise a seminar, it always is! But if the objective was to bring coaches together and create an opportunity for coaches to further their knowledge as well as an opportunity to discus and debate table tennis in this country then I would say for a first attempt it achieved all that a maybe more. The program was a bit over ambitious (not a fault) and it was not possible to cover everything but there was a promise that there will be more to come and I will eagerly look forward to that.

The group was a good size but I was surprised that there were not more coaches attending and I expect there will be a bigger demand next time once the word gets out.

I would personally like to thank Colum for his time and as a tutor I also know how much preparation has to go on at something like this. A thanks to ALSAA who made their excellent facilities available and especially to all the other coaches on the course, it was a pleasure to meet you all. I did manage to slip in a bit of table tennis when I gate crashed the junior coaching in the main hall and had a few games of top table during our lunch break. Thanks everyone I had a great time and I'll get you next time!

Great Performance by Irish Girls by Eamon Nealon
Once again the Irish girls collected a medal at the primary school's Championship. Over the past 4 years they have contested the primary school's finals, and on all occasions it has been against their rival's England, a marvellous achievement for the Irish girls to remain in the top two at the 6 Nation's event.

For the Ballina club it was also a strong statement in the game to have 3 of the 4 player's representing the team at this international event they were Chloe Nealon, Sarah Timlin, Brid McAndrew, and making up the 4th team member from Leinster Kerrie Phoenix

In their first round match they faced Wales with Chloe getting the girls off to a fine start and hoping to settle the nerves of her team mates, but it was not to be, with both Sarah Timlin and Brid McAndrew losing out to Hanna Avery, Bethany Batstone respectively. Kerrie Phoenix made amends by beating A. Philips 3-1.

With scores levelled at 2-2, doubles partners Chloe/Kerrie made it 3-2 before Wales took the second doubles betting Brid/Sarah. Chloe quickly restored the lead for Ireland beating Hanna Avery 3-1. But Wales were not going to roll over and give up so easy they levelled matters once again when both Amy Palin and A Philips beat both Brid and Sarah in the singles and for the first time in the match Ireland were behind. With Kerrie left to play, and might I say play she did, not fazed by the pressure she beat Bethany Batstone 3-2.

With the scores now levelled at 5-5, it went back to the dreaded count back of sets to appoint the winners. Last year Ireland fell victim of the count back, but for the girls of 2006 the luck of the Irish must have been on their shoulders as they won 22 sets in favour to 21 against.

With nerves now settled, Guernsey faced a more determined Irish team. Ireland winning 8-2 on this occasion. It was the Irish no-1 that dropped a set to Alice Loveridge 3-2 in one of he matches of the tournament and for both these girls it was their 3rd consecutive primary international event.

Brid McAndrew also lost out to Alice against Scotland the score of 10-0 reflected the way the girls were now playing and were building up moral and spirit for their final encounter with England. Once again it was the TSP sponsored player Chloe that asserted her self and put the Alice match behind her, coming out with all guns blaring beating both the English no-1 and no-2 but for her team mates it was to be a more difficult task the English being strong in depth.. However Sarah did manage to take the only other match, beating Emma Tovey 3-1, Brid and Kerrie tried as they could butthey could not brake down the English squad and it finished with a final score 7-3 to England Results Ire v Wales 5-5 Ire won on count back Ire v Scot 10-0 Ire v Guer 8-2 Ire v Eng. 3-7 In the singles event all 4 girls reached the last 16. Kerrie finishing 9th----16th place quarter finals- Sarah losing to team mate Chloe 3-0 quarter finals- Brid losing to C.White 3-0 semi final and taking the bronze medal Chloe losing 3-2 to Emily bates of England

Congrats to all 4 girls for playing their heart out over the weekend and be proud of your achievement as your NPC yea were all exceptional over the 3 days well done and thanks to both Bernie Nealon and Mrs. Phoenix on acting role as chaperone to the girls, not that they were sent by the ITTA.

Other News
Nigeria has taken England by storm in the Women’s Table Tennis defeating them soundly 3-1 and claiming a berth in the Quarter Finals.

Nigeria’s Offiong Edem said, “I feel so fine, I just know that we are going to win Gold!”

It won’t be an easy run though for Nigeria being matched up against a very confident Indian team.

With a Semi Final berth up for grabs, something neither nation achieved at Manchester in 2002, the stakes certainly are high.

In a trans-Tasman match-up, Australia will enter as a warm favourites in their Quarter Finals having gone through the pool phase undefeated in four matches, whereas New Zealand qualified despite winning only one of their three matches.

Canada, a Semi Finalist from Manchester, takes on the white-hot Malaysia. Malaysia is showing solid form throughout its four pool matches.

With the four top-ranked players in Melbourne all representing Singapore, it would appear that only one outcome is possible in its Quarter Final with Wales.

The Indian Men's Table Tennis team has kept its unbeaten run alive with a solid win over Ghana on day three.

Whilst Ghana won't proceed to the Quarter Final stage, they will go with the knowledge that they provided stiff competition for pool leaders Australia and India

Gold medal favourite Singapore has warmed up for its quarter final today with a routine win over Uganda in the women’s team event.

Uganda finished the pool stage of the competition without a victory, but gained wonderful experience playing strong opposition opponents Canada, New Zealand and Singapore.

Youngster Shing’s rise to the top in table tennis
VANUATU's Yoshua Shing is a boy among men – literally – at the Commonwealth Games.

The 12-year-old table tennis player is believed to be the youngest-ever competitor at the Games, first held in 1930, though officials said yesterday that they were still scouring the history books to confirm it.

Shing, just 1.50m (4' 11'') tall and weighing 50kg (110lbs), has risen to the top of the sport in Vanuatu.

The tiny Pacific island nation of about 206,000 people comprised of some 70 islands lying about half way between Hawaii and Australia has only four table tennis tables, Ian Prenter, the country's team attache, was cited as saying by Melbourne's Herald-Sun newspaper.

After showing promise in his home country, Shing was invited to China by a wealthy Chinese businessman to hone his skill and prepare for the Games.

Singapore, England plot table tennis domination International News
MELBOURNE, Australia: Singapore and England will face off for table tennis honours at the Commonwealth Games, planning to emulate their domination when the event made its debut four years ago.

New Zealand and neighbour Australia are plotting to break the stranglehold. Singapore, a nation of only 4.2 million people, took home three of the eight gold medals on offer at the last Games in Manchester - the first time table tennis had been included as a Commonwealth sport.

They also picked a silver and six bronze, by far the country’s most successful event. England also snared three gold, but neither country won the titles that really mattered - the men’s and women’s singles in a sport that began as an after-dinner parlour game for upper class Victorians in the late 19th Century. In an upset, Nigeria’s Segun Toriola beat Canadian Johnny Huang to win the men’s event while Chinese-born Li Chunli became the darling of New Zealand when she gave them their first ever table tennis gold in the women’s competition.

Li beat Singapore’s Li Jiawei, who is determined to go one better this year and perch on top of the podium. Her chances of doing so are immeasurably better since the aging Li retired.

But the Li family could still come back to haunt her. Karen Li, Li Chunli’s sister who won silver in the doubles and bronze in the team event four years ago, sprearheads the Kiwi charge.

New Zealand also have the experienced Peter Jackson in their squad, a four-time Olympian who will shepherd a young team. Singapore’s Li was a triple gold medallist in Manchester four years ago and again carries the hopes of a nation on her shoulders, looking for a clean sweep of womens doubles and singles, mixed doubles and womens team titles.

The world No.3 will be joined by two other members of the medal winning team in 2002 — Zhang Xue Ling and Tan Paey Fern. After scoring Nigeria’s first top table tennis title in 20 years in Manchester, Toriola went off the boil and will not be defending his crown in Melbourne, opening the door to any number of promising Commonwealth paddlers.

England are bringing a mix of experience and young talent to Australia, including a 15-year-old in Paul Drinkhall. Also in the squad is Andrew Baggaley, who teamed with Gareth Herbert in Manchester to win the men’s doubles.

Their most experienced campaigner is Alan Cooke, who competed at the 1988 and 1992 Olympics. Host nation Australia, not known as a table tennis power, are confident that this could change on home soil with secret weapon Stephanie Sang waiting in the wings.

Sang moved from table tennis powerhouse China to Australia in 2002 and became a citizen last October. She is now ranked Australia’s number one and believes she can upset the favourites.

Ryan Jenkins heads a strong challenge from Wales. The 26-year-old won silver in the doubles alongside Adam Robertson at Manchester and is the tiny nation’s best ping pong hope in Melbourne.

Safir International Tournament 2006
Players from over 46 countries were in attendance which basically made the event an unofficial World Championships for underage players. The Tournament had to place a new limit on Swedish juniors requiring them to be ranked in the top 30 in Sweden to participate. There were a number of former Swedish stars serving as coaches with Stellan Bengtsson and Jorgen Persson coaching Qatar, Ulf Carlsson coaching Norway and Thomas Von Scheele working with the Swedish troupe.

Shane Dazzles as Player of the Tournament by P.Dolan
While Irish Junior and Cadet Players were successfully competing in the Six Nations Table Tennis Championships in Scotland, and the Irish Senior squad travelling to the Mid Sussex Open in England with mixed success, it was Swords native and Filton College Bristol based Irish Junior Shane Dolan who arguably displayed the best Table Tennis of his career.

On Saturday coached by National Ladies Coach Athur Brett he finished 2nd in the Band 5 and 3rd in the Band 4 event’s while on Sunday he only missed out on qualifying out of his group on a count back after a terrific fight back from 2 nil down to beat highly ranked Rob Lemon, Shane upped his game further in the U21s reaching the last 16 before running out of steam and the effects of a heavy cold after this hectic 2 day schedule.

After receiving a presentation of Edinburgh crystal for his 2nd place on Saturday, There were further honours in store for Shane when from the 300 plus players competing Shane was voted Player of the Tournament by the organisers such was the measure of his performances.

Shane who was unhappy with his progress here in Ireland decided to combine a 2 year Diploma in Sports Science with full time training in the newly opened Bristol Sports Academy .Since moving to England in September Shane is only one of three Irish Junior players in full time training with Aileen and Ciara O Donnell from Ballina T T C now based in France.

A measure of Shane all round development has been an invitation from the manager of the Bristol Rovers Academy Team also based on campus to sign up after an impressive display in a challenge match between students and Academy Coaches, Shane decided to concentrate on his Table Tennis much to the delight of Academy Director of Table Tennis Kevin Satchell. Shanes goal being a place on the Irish Junior Team in the European Championships this Summer.

6 Nations Junior and Cadet Championships , Largs, Scotland 10-12/02/06 The Irish Teams got off to a good start at the 6 Nations Champs with wins for U14 Boys and girls and the U17 Boys. The U17 Girls were disappointed to loose 4-1. Saturday morning started off with matches against Guernsey and the U14 Boys were able to walk away with a 5-0 victory, with Sam Hanley and Paul McCreery winning their matches in confident style. This was later matched with a 4-1 victory over the Scottish home side.

The U14 Girls team of Claire Nelson and Chloe Nealon were able to match the boys performance also claiming a 4-1 win. Unfortunately both Junior teams were unable to beat the Scots with the U17 Boys going close with a 2-3 score line. The U17 girls went down 1-4. This set up the both U14 teams with an exciting ,match against the English for the Gold medal. This however proved to be one step too far with the boys going down 1-3 and the girls 5-0 but the squad was well pleased with the Silver medal position.

The U17 Boys also had to play England and David Hayes put in a fine performance against David Meades and at one stage with a 2-1 lead and a match point it look like he might just pull it off. However David Meades made a fine recovery to take the fifth and final set and England went on to win 5-0 and take the overall Gold in the junior event. Ireland beat off the challenge of Guernsey to take Bronze. The U17 girls also saw off the challenge of Guernsey finishing in 4th place.

Sunday proved to be semi-final day for the Irish in the singles with both Claire Nelson and Chloe Nealon reaching the semis, David Hayes met David Meades once again in the semis but fell 3-1. Fiona Dennet also put in a good performance to reach the semis.

It was Paul McCreery who eventually broke the dead lock to impressively beat Ben Avery 3-0 to reach the boys U14 Final. In the final he played Wing Yung Chan of England and lost 0-3, and was awarded the Silver Medal.

Congratulations to all the Irish players and NPCs who must take satisfaction in a much improved team performance at this years 6 Nations.

The Safir's International Mikael Andersson ITTF GJP Manager
In fact I would not hesitate to say that the Safir's International Event today is the most important table tennis event of the year in Sweden featuring close to 700 particpants from 47 countries. As an international table tennis happening in Sweden, it has by far surpassed , such a strong "brand" as the Swedish Open (SOC)

ITTF World Junior Circuit Event
For the fourth year in a row the Örebro event is part of the steadily growing ITTF World Junior Circuit. In 2006, a total of fourteen events in all the six continents will qualify twelve junior boys and twelve junior girls for the ITTF WJC finals in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

With a field of close to 160 junior boys and 84 girls in junior singles this is one of the hardest circuit events to win. Browsing through the mouth-watering entry lists is indeed a true delight for any fan of our sport, ITTF GJP Managers included. To predict the final outcome should certainly be worth more than a free wooden seat in Idrottshuset.

Favourites
Playing in Örebro, for the very first time, is one of the most interesting junior boy players in the world for the moment. Doomed for stardom and with plenty of Pro Tour experience under his belt, the sixteen year old CHIANG Hung - Chieh from Chinese Taipei will be the player to beat in this event. With a balanced, well groomed, modern game he can even pose a treat deep into the Men's singles - Nittaku Cup event on Friday evening.

In the girls' event my vote goes to the Romanian left hander Elizabeth SAMARA to defend her junior title from last year. Even if there still is plenty to wish for in terms of aggressiveness, footwork and pure strength, SAMARA always seems to survive with her healthy skills of placement and spin variation.

Future
Let me finally, so to say, throw in some real candy for the future in the ring.

Making his first start in Sweden, but surely not the last, is the 11 year old Adam HMAM from Tunisia. The opponents will of course be too tough to handle this time but the youngster is still worth a look as one of the more promising young players from Africa.

You will find him somewhere close to the surrounds, far away from the table. Not efficient on this level – but the entertainment level remains high.

Talented Korean
Competing with no. 299 on his back is one of the finest young cadet boys in the world today. Brilliant technique, fighting spirit and maybe the best cheer in the world of table tennis is coming to Sweden. Name: JUNG Young Sik, Country; Korea Republic.

To all the coaches, athletes, spectators and the media attending the Safir’s 2006 – Thanks for showing interest in the ITTF World Junior Circuit 2006. Welcome to Sweden. Enjoy the moment.

Denmark Table Tennis Team Cancels Trip By Jan M Olsen Associated Press
Denmark's table tennis team canceled a trip to the Middle East this month because of Islamic outrage over Danish cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.

Denmark will take part in the Turin Olympics, which begin Friday. But its soccer federation is considering calling off an exhibition game in Israel on March 1.

Denmark's table tennis association said Tuesday it will not compete in Pro Tour events in Qatar and Kuwait, starting Feb. 13. The federation had planned to send Olympic men's doubles bronze medalists Michael Maze and Finn Tugwell and two other players.

"We're really sorry that we had to cancel our participation because of the situation in the world," table tennis federation spokesman Arne Madsen said.

On Monday, Israeli Arabs protested outside the Danish Embassy in Tel Aviv, and Danish flags have been burned during protests on the West Bank.

Some teams have strengthened their ranks with new signings recently and this has already had an effect on the division 2 results compared to the first round. Notably this week Ping Pongers winning 5 sets to 4 against top placed leisure Clothing.

PING PONG Reviewed by Jamie Russell
Ping Pong may be an unlikely subject for a feature film, but this madcap Japanese outing proves to be much more than just a load of old balls. Based on a popular Japanese Manga comic, it's the story of two table tennis players: cocksure Peco (Yôsuke Kubozuka), and his retiring mate "Smile" (Arata) as they prepare for a major high school tournament. Unloading an inventive arsenal of surreal camera tricks and overblown characters, Ping Pong more than lives up to its zappy title.

Described by some critics as The Matrix of ping pong, this little film comes with a great weight of expectation behind it. For the most part, it doesn't disappoint, delivering some off-the-wall thrills as Peco and Smile play in competition against their adversaries: tetchy China (Sam Lee), who didn't make his homeland's national team so has come to Japan to start over; Demon (Akira Nishihara), a slaphead with black-rimmed specs and a big mouth; and the fearsome Dragon (Shido Nakamura), the martial arts ninja of the ping pong world.

"ZANY FLIGHTS OF FANTASY"

"No other sport demands the reaction time of ping pong," yells the boys' demented coach as he whips them into shape. It's something that director Fumihiko Sori has obviously taken to heart since he uses an array of technical tricks to capture the energy and the agony of the game. Slow-mos follow the tiny plastic ball as it backspins across the table, while speeded-up sequences show the players hurtling through the air. Part The Matrix, part The Karate Kid, and completely ping pong bonkers, it's full of zany flights of fantasy.

Still, with its none-too-subtle message about gamesmanship, it's never as much fun as it could have been (check out Battlefield Baseball for a really extreme Asian sports movie). But for what it's worth, it's undoubtedly the best ping pong movie ever made!

The Greatest Match Up of All Time

Jesus (Nazereth TTC) was due to take on Satan (Hades TTC) in one of the most anticipated matches of the Millenium. Unfortunately the match, due to take place before Easter at the Desert Sands resort, had to be cancelled at the last minute when Satan said he would refuse to start at love all. Jesus was awarded a walk-over.

Ballina Girls at Munster Openby Eamon Nealon
Disappointed not having played in the ladies event the evening before, trio Jenny O'Donnell, Susan Nealon and Chloe returned to the cadet rankings after being out of the competition for the past 6months. Susan had reason to smile when she retained her Munster cadet open title after she proved to her critic's that she did not require an anti loop or long pimple to win, she was to play with a short pimple a change she made earlier in the year. She beat fellow team-mate and sister Chloe in the u-14 girls final, for Chloe this was her first time in a cadet final. At the tender age of 11 years she knocked out the top seed Clare nelson of Ulster in the semi final in a 5set thriller, Chloe 10-7 down in the 4th and with both the national coach Arthur Brett, and the Ballina coach Eamon Nealon on the edge of their seats, dishing out to THEIR players the tactical instructions to apply the TSP sponsored player gather her composure went on to take the 4th.and never looked back, taking the 5th 11-9 in what has to be said an outstanding game of table tennis. With all of the shots of the men's game in the u-12 event the Ballina player's dominated the competition when all 4 girls from the club reached the semi final's, Chloe taking the winner's rostrum and her second trophy of the day, Brid McAndrew 2nd, Sarah Timlin3rd, and Cora Duffy 4th. Jenny O'Donnell struggled with form and playing also with a change to her bat, to short pimples was knocked out of the cadet competition in the last 8 by Clare Nelson.

Veterans British League by Max McNeill
Both Mens and Ladies teams were very successful in the first round of the Vets British league held in Stoke on Trent on 12/13 November.

The mens team, Shamrocks, competing in Division 2, finished in third place with 5 points, 3 behind the leaders. Dave Pemberton won 7 out of 10, and was well supported by Karim Sabir with 6 and Kevin Mackey with 5. A good performance in the second round of matches could see them promoted to Division 1.

The ladies team, Colleens, exceeded their expectations in finishing in third place in the very competitive premier division. Jenny Harrison was in superb form winning 7 out of 10 and was well supported by Marjorie McNeill and Teresa Devaney. Their great performance has given them a good chance of staying in the premier division for the first time. The second round of matches will take place in Doncaster in February.

Polish national coach’s fruitful visit to Malta
Last week the Malta Table Tennis Association, through an agreement made with the European Table Tennis Union, had the privilege to host in Malta Laszek Kucharski from Poland who is definitely one of the best Table Tennis coaches presently in circulation in Europe.

Kucharski is currently head coach of the Polish female national team and in 2003 was coach of the Polish youths who succeeded in winning a gold medal in the European Youths Team Championships.

Kucharski holds many prestigious international victories be it as a singles player where he succeeded in reaching the world number 11 ranking and also as a doubles competitor where he held the Polish title for a number of years.

In Malta Kucharski was engaged with the local elite junior players, and he successfully conducted sessions for a whole week apart from passing on knowledge to the local youngsters in order for them to step up another level in their game.

He also conducted a seminar for Maltese coaches and enlightened them on the latest techniques of the game. The MTTA delegates took him on a visit to some schools where practical and fun sessions were implemented to the delight of enthusiastic students. Kucharski visited the latest private Table Tennis Centre in Tarxien and shared his thoughts with the coaches at the Centre, encouraging them to keep up the good work.

At the end of his stay the MTTA was presented with a report by the top international coach so as to work on areas which he felt needed to be addressed most in respect of young aspirants. Without doubt the Malta Table Tennis Association will act up on the professional advise that has been put forward.

Irish Seniors Successful In European Qualifiers Irish Table Tennis News
Hot on the heels of their 2nd place finish in the 6 Nations Seniors in Cardiff in September both the Irish Mens and Womens Senior Teams began October with a successful weekend in the European Qualification Division events in Latvia and Denmark.

The Mens Team of Colum Slevin, Jason Sugrue, Conor Nolan and John Murphy won Group B of the Division held in Latvia, beating Lithuania and San Marino 3/0 and Latvia 3/2.

The Womens Team of Michelle McGreevey, Tara Fusco and Amanda Mogey, playing in a Group of 5 teams in Denmark, beat Iceland and Kosova 3/0 and lost to Norway 3/2 and Denmark 3/0. Their match versus Norway was on a knife edge at 2/2 after Michelle McGreevey had beaten the Norwegian No 2 and Amanda Mogey, winning her first cap had beaten the No.3. In the final match between the No. 1's Michelle led 10/9 in the fifth set before losing the next point to what NPC Arthur Brett described as a "wicked" edge ball. She subsequently lost the set 14/12 and Ireland the match 3/2.

Report on European Ladies Qualification League held in Bronby, Denmark 1 / 2 October 2005
The Irish Senior Ladies team played exceptionally over the weekend and were very unlucky to lose the decisive match to Norway. Michele McCreevy was leading 10/9 and played an excellent forehand which her opponent barely reached and the ball flew up into the air. Her opponent, Stine Haga, was on her way around the table to congratulate Michele as the ball dropped as an edge on Michelle side of the table. Play resumed at 10/10 and Haga eventually won the set and the match 14/12. As can be seen from the scores below Ireland had excellent 3-0 wins over Iceland and Kosovo. Even against Denmark, while Ireland won only one set, the scores in all sets were very close, showing an improved competitive edge from the Irish players. All the players played with confidence and determination and Michele is playing the best table tennis of her career. She has improved, as an international player by 20 points or more and is now beating players with a top-200 ranking in Europe. The team will go into Stage 2 in third place and full of confidence as the top three teams will be promoted to the Challenge Division in the European Championships in 2007.

The Past, the Present and the FUTURE Mikael Andersson, ITTF GJP Manager
ITTF WJC Finals & WCC Santo Domingo – Dominican Republic

In a very short time the ITTF World Cadet Challenge & World Junior Circuit Finals, showcasing young talented athletes from all over the world, has matured into one of the finest ITTF events of the year.

The first year of the ITTF World Junior Circuit Finals featured five circuit events with a final selection of 16 athletes competing for the title, very much in the shadow of the 2002 ITTF Pro Tour finals in Stockholm.

Earlier that year in June, a unique event took its first stumbling steps, “The ITTF World Cadet Challenge”. During some very hot days in the small city of Tiszjaovarous, Hungary, we came up with the idea of having continental teams competing in a challenge with selected National teams for the cadet age.

Pioneering Years
The following year in Malaysia, a few of us worked endless hours in order to control the ITTF World Cadet Challenge and World Junior Circuit finals, for the first time merged together into one event.

Those were the intense pioneer years. With a fast approach and plenty of support from the ITTF Executive Committee the ITTF Global Junior Programme took off and quickly found solid ground as a key component in a wide range of development activities.

Momentum
Today it is more than evident that the ITTF Global Junior Programme is gaining momentum as a movement, inspiring young talented table tennis players to add a few more hours of practice in order to achieve identified goals and to qualify for our premier events – the ITTF World Cadet Challenge, the ITTF World Junior Circuit Finals and of course the flagship event, the ITTF World Junior Table Tennis Championships.

We have come a long way in a short time. Organizers of GJP events all around the world are seeing increased participation and better quality events. With a slow but steadily growing ITTF World Junior Circuit and a good influx of new events for Mini Cadet and Cadets, more and younger athletes in the coming years will get a good feel for the qualities needed to succeed on the International level.

With a long list of ideas centering around sponsorship, promotional and supportive aspects, we now go to work to make the Global Junior Programme the most interesting programme in the ITTF. Remember that we are building a home for the future of our sport. Some athletes, seen for the first time today, will be the stars of tomorrow and remain for a long time as front athletes for the ITTF.

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic is providing the scene for the 2005 edition of the ITTF WCC &WJC finals. Even with a few strong associations and their athletes missing, we can all look forward to a quality event featuring some of the very best young athletes in our sport.

Just following distantly the activity levels of the continental teams getting ready for the ITTF WCC has been a true delight. Planning and preparation efforts have been present in a way never seen before. Interconnected with the ITTF With the Future in Mind project and the ITTF Development plan, Team Africa is investing close to US $ 40,000 in preparation for the ITTF World Cadet Challenge. Europe as well as Latin America are holding preparation camps and Oceania is arriving with their team well in advance in order to get accustomed to new playing conditions. In the absence of China the ITTF has the honor of welcoming two National teams to Santo Domingo. The defending European team champions, England, will participate in the boys section, and Japan, will have the honor for the girls.

For the juniors, twelve ITTF WJC events held in six continents finally produced a line up consisting of 24 athletes from 14 countries, including some of the most interesting and talented players currently present in our sport.

Favourite
The hard-hitting Romanian, Daniela DODEAN, enters the competition as the favorite in the girls' event. Coming off a successful season and as the defending titleholder, she will have to fight off a tight field of evenly matched and capable girls.

With the two highest ranked junior boys in the world, both of Japanese origin, confirming participation for Santo Domingo, local fans and spectators are guaranteed the highest level of entertainment.

Matured
In the last four months, sixteen-year-old Jun MIZIUTANI has matured into a player with the capacity to beat any top 20-ranked athlete in the world. With recent victories against players like CHUAN Chi Yuan (TPE) and WANG Hao (CHN) he will, without hesitation, be handed the role of the favorite in a boy’s event stacked with talented competitors.

In the year 2005 we have seen the ITTF Global Junior Programme grow, mature and more importantly, inspire young talents and promising coaches. This is more than true, especially looking at the development in Latin America with record participation in several key events. Many, many things still have to improve. Overall planning, confidence and technical knowledge being some areas to work with in the next few years.

Interest
With the overall interest for Junior Table tennis growing by the minute, the event in Santo Domingo will be in the spot light for table tennis fans from all over the world. Although maybe few of them will be physically present, the ITTF Web site will experience record attention.

Together we are moving forward with the ambition to make our sport grow. The 2005 ITTF World Junior Circuit Final & ITTF World Cadet Challenge, in the hands of a motivated, proud and skilled organizer will be a shining proof of our Global Presence.

Thank you for making the ITTF Global Junior programme part of your daily life, supporting us with sponsorship, athleteism and coaching attention..

Thank you for organizing and managing our events.

With the future in mind!

Table Tennis For All by Ian Marshall, Editor of Table Tennis Illustrated
It is the elite few who hit the headlines in sport; table tennis is no exception. However, for most people sport is something to be enjoyed, an activity that provides exercise and it should be fun to play.

Table tennis is somewhat unique in the sporting world; it is the one sport that everyone can play and perhaps it is the one sport that at some level, everybody has played

Slow Down
Over the years sport has become faster owing to the advancements in technology. Therefore, for table tennis players, who cannot race around the court like RYU Seung Min, enthral the crowds with stone wall defence in the mode of KIM Kyung Ah, lob the ball into the atmosphere in the fashion of Michael MAZE, mesmerise opponents with subtle services as executed by Werner SCHLAGER, release a thundering forehand in the manner of WANG Liqin or play with the exquisite balance of ZHANG Yining, then perhaps we just need to slow down.

The answer, in order to slow down, to encourage more people to play table tennis and to promote `Table Tennis For All’; might well be found in Japan and the answer, a larger ball.

Not A New Idea
Wait a minute, haven’t we just done that? The ball used to be 38mm in diameter, now it’s 40mm and when you see the smaller ball, it now looks very small, it’s as though you are playing with a marble or a garden pea!

However, in Japan, they organise competitions using a ball that is 44mm in diameter. The concept was originally promoted some fifteen years ago by the late Ichiro OGIMURA, the former World champion and President of the International Table Tennis Federation, who no doubt believed that the game was becoming too fast and losing its attraction to the masses.

It was a bold move when you consider that in the early 1990’s the thought using a ball that was larger than 38mm was frowned upon in most quarters a further 2mm increase in the diameter would surely never be agreed. It was a most drastic proposal but one that reflected the attitude of a man who cared deeply for the sport that had brought him great rewards.

Modifications Furthermore, there are other modifications to the laws of table tennis for `Larger Ball Tournaments’. The height of the net is 2cm higher and the racket has to have short pimples; reversed rubber, anti-spin, long pimples are not allowed.

Also, in the conventional manner games are played to eleven points, should the score reach 10-all, then as in the established game the service alternates until one player is two points clear but if the score reaches 12-all, then it’s sudden death! The player who wins the next point wins the game!

Established
In Japan, the `Larger Ball Tournaments’ are now well established; the speed the ball travels is reduced, the amount of spin that can be imparted is much less and the competitions have proved very popular, especially amongst veteran players.

It is `Table Tennis For All`, it’s fun and is it successful?

Well, judge for yourself. At the World Veteran Championships in Yokohama in 2004 a `Larger Ball Tournament’ was held; over 1,000 players entered whilst the `Larger Ball National Championships’ in Japan this year attracted almost 1,500 players!

The figures speak for themselves.

Irish Junior Ranking News 24/9/05
The 1st IJR of the season is being held at the IWA in Dublin. Ulster's Paul McCreevy caused one of the biggest surprises of the day when he beat Irish Junior No.1 David Hayes in the semi-final of the U17 event. Paul found himself 2 sets up only to have David come back to level the score at 2-2. However it was last years No.6 Cadet who went on to reach the final against fellow Ulsterman Keith Knox. This time Paul found himself 2-0 down and managed to fight back to reach 2-2 but Keith managed to stave off Paul's topspin attack to take the first U17 title of the season.

Neal "Chopper" O'Flynn from Eastpoint took centre stage in the Boys U12 event displaying his new style chopping with long pimples on the backhand and using his forehand topspin attack to great effect and managing to overcome the lack of space back from the table. I am told Neal who was last year's No.2 has only taken to the defensive game in the last 3 weeks after it was suggested by Irish National Coach Colum Slevin. Neal won the final 3-1 against Leinster's Sam Logue. The U14's tomorrow will prove an even bigger test for this talented youngster.

Volkswagen Open - Japan, Yokohama
The top four seeds in the Women’s Singles all reached their allotted semi-final final places at the Volkswagen Open Japan in Yokohama, following the quarter-finals played on Saturday 24th September 2005.

The first semi-final will be between ZHANG Yining and GUO Yue; it is a repeat of one week earlier when the two met at the same stage at the Volkswagen Open China in Shenzhen; meanwhile, the second semi-final will see their colleague, GUO Yan play Singapore’s LI Jia Wei.

In the quarter-finals of the Men’s Doubles, the two and a half thousand strong crowd had cause for celebration. Seiya KISHIKAWA and Ryusuke SAKAMOTO beat the number two seeds, China’s CHEN Qi and WANG Hao.

The quarter-finals of the Women’s Doubles had seen all three of the host nation’s(Japan) pairings exit proceeding in the quarter-finals; in the Women’s Singles all three of their remaining players fell in the round of the last sixteen.

Not over till its over
A sporting contest is never over until the final whistle blows, until the finishing line has been crossed or until the final point has been played.

In the third round of the Men’s Singles event at the Volkswagen Open Japan in Yokohama on Saturday 24th September 2005 it appeared that the reigning Olympic champion, Korea’s RYU Seung Min, was about to bid farewell

He had led Patrick CHILA of France by three games to two but CHILA had levelled by winning the sixth game and in the seventh he made the far better start.

Time Out
CHILA led 4-1; the stage at which RYU Sung Min called `Time Out’; the match was slipping away the Korean needed to re-think, he needed to put the brakes on his adversary’s momentum.

However, the break didn’t work in his favour, Patrick CHILA won the next point, when the players changed ends he was 5-1 ahead. RYU Seung Min won the next point to reduce the deficit but then CHILA responded. He won the next three points and was ahead 8-2, he was within sight of the winning post.

The Korean kept trying, to some extent he threw caution to the wind and reduced the arrears to 8-5; however, a heavy forehand topspin played `down-the-line’ into RYU Sung Min’s forehand was not returned, CHILA was 9-5 ahead. He was almost there but that was to be the last point he won. RYU Seung Min won the next six points and was through to the quarter-finals.

“He played very well”, said RYU Seung Min. “In the seventh game when I was losing by so much my mind changed.” Most certainly something changed; the noticeable fact was that he attacked much more quickly. “I might lose, it’s not the end of the world”, he continued. “I relaxed and played positively.”

True but tactically there was an important change. “He was returning service well, if I served with backspin, he returned with heavy backspin or played a short touched return close to the net; that made it hard for me to attack”, continued RYU Seung Min. “I decided to serve short with no spin, he flipped the service, it came long and I could attack.”

The change worked and RYU Sung Min was through to the quarter-finals.

Home Nations International Singles
Jason Sugrue reached the Semi Final stages of the Home Nations International beating Euan Walker (10,-7,8,6) in the quarter finals. He eventually lost to Andrew Rushton -8,-6,-7) John Murphy reached the quarter final stage loosing to the eventual winner Alex Perry (-4,-7,-5). Conor Nolan also reached the last eight beating Niall Cameron in a tight 5 setter ((9, -9, 8, -8, 4) and then narrowly lost out to Gavin Rumgay (-5, -5, 6, 8, -6).

In the ladies Tara Fusco was knocked out of the last at the last 16 loosing to Jenny Galloway (-3,-2,9,-6). Michelle McGreevy also went out at the same stage loosing to Siwan Davies (-9,-9,-6). Sabrina Conway in a very tough group which included both Siwan Davis and Jenny Galloway finished 3rd in her group.

Team Event
Ireland Vs Scotland
The Irish men narrowly lost out to Scotland despite the winning combination of Sugrue and Slevin in the doubles. All matches but one went to five sets with John Murphy putting up a nailbitter against Scotland's Gavin Rumgay. It was Rumgay who finally tipped the scales with another 5 set win this time against Irish No.1 Jason Sugrue 15-13 in the 5th.

Tara Fusco and Michelle McGreevy only needed three matches to secure their win against the Scottish women to beat Scotland with a combined score of 5-3.

Ireland Vs Guernsey
John Murphy and Conor Nolan beat Guernsey without dropping a set and the ladies also needed only 3 matches to take the win. A combined score of 6-0. Ireland Vs Wales
Jason Sugrue took out Stephen Jenkins 3-0, while Conor Nolan needed only 4 sets against Stephen Gertsen. Sugrue and Slevin combined once again in the doubles for a straight 3-0 win for the men.

The women got off to a slow start with Siwan Davis taking the first match against Tara Fusco. Michelle McGreevey picked up one point against Naomi Owen but the combination of Fusco and McGreevy loosing the doubles, Naomi Owen was able to secure a 3-1 victory for Wales. However with a combined score of 4-3 the Irish team secured another victory.

Ireland Vs England
England were always going to be favourite for this event but Jason Sugrue nearly caused an upset when he took Alex Perry to the 5th set loosing 4/11, 11/7, 9/11, 11/9, 9/11. Conor Nolan found Andrew Rushton too strong and even the combination of Slevin and Sugrue were unable to break the English grip on the match.

Tara Fusco lost to Helen Lower in the first match but Michelle McGreevy brought the score back to 1 all with a 3-1 defeat of Georgina Walker (-10, 12,8,9). With a defeat in the doubles Michelle needed to beat the Individual finalist Helen Lower to remain in the match and this proved just too much for the in form Ulster woman. Ireland suffered their only defeat of the Championships 6-1.

Ireland Vs Isle of Man
The Isle of Man have been absent for a number of years and still have some rebuilding. Conor Nolan and John Murphy won their match 3-0 without dropping a set and this was repeated in the Womens by Michelle McGreevy and Tara Fusco, for a combined score of 6-0.

Other news
Guernsey took a significant win against the Scottish women when Dawn Morgan beat Jenny Galloway in three sets and Kay Chivers beat Gillian Edwards. With Guernsey winning the doubles Guernsey recorded a rare win against one of the larger nations, displaying the great strides they are making in their overall development.

Sugrue and McGreevey Win Classification ITTA Press Release 29/08/05
The domestic season got off to an explosive start at the weekend at the IWA Dublin with a Classification tournament. This event produced some of the most competitive action with the quality of play the best that has been seen, in the domestic game, for the last twenty years. Games were played on an energy-sapping best of seven basis and even in the group stages many games went to seven sets. The competitors were so closely matched that the final placings could not be decided until the very last games were played and many players were in with a chance of winning the event for a long part of the day.

In the end the Mens winner was Jason Sugrue (London Progress) who remained unbeaten over the weekend, even though he was taken to the seventh set on many occasions. In second place was Conor Nolan (Leinster) who lost just two games, the final to Sugrue and to Keith Knox earlier in the day. In third place was John Murphy (Leinster) who lost to Sugrue in the Semifinals and to John Cowan in the seventh. Fourth was John Cowan, making an impressive return to the game, losing deuce in the seventh to Nolan in the Semis. Cowan had to forfeit his 3rd/4th place match with Murphy as he had to catch a flight. In fifth place was last seasons National Champion, Brian Fitzgerald (Munster) who was beaten by Sugrue and Nolan thereby missing out on a semifinal spot. In sixth was Na Ning (Leinster) who lost to Cowan, Murphy and Fitzgerald all on 4-2 scorelines. Next came Peter Graham, Andrew Dennison, David Hayes, Rory Scott, Daryl Strong, Philip Wallace, Keith Knox, Conor Fahy, Kevin Devanney and Marcus McDonnell. The four qualifiers from Saturdays event were Cowan, Scott, Knox and Devanney who then had to face the top fourteen players on Sunday.

Michele McGreevey (Ulster) was the winner of the Ladies event, remaining unbeaten over the weekend. Tara Fusco (Leinster) was in second place, losing only to McGreevey. In third place was a qualifier from Saturdays event, Amanda Mogey (Ulster) losing only to the top two. Jenny Harrison (Ulster) was fourth followed by Sabrina Conway (Leinster), Rhonda Fox (Leinster), Amy Tobin (Leinster) another qualifier from Saturday, and Teresa Devanney (Leinster),

Overall the players were delighted with the standard of play and many matches were so close that the result could have gone either way.

The next events are National and Provincial training camps on 10th-11th Sept followed by Stiga Irish Junior Classification at IWA on 24th-25th Sept.

Butterfly Liverpool Grand Prix Open By Don Davies
The City of Liverpool Butterfly Grand Prix Open men's singles title went to an Emerald Isle

Seeded at two, Ireland's Colum Slevin, cruised through the early rounds, dropping just one game, (11-9 to Scotland's Kenny Lindsay) en-route to the quarter finals. Liverpool's Kevin Dolder was his next victim, the Irishman easing through the first two games 11-3, 11-7 before the England number 33, kept the encounter alive, winning the third, 13-11. Slevin was unaffected by this and swept home 11-2 for a 3 -1 victory, before ousting third seed and holder Euan Walker in a tremendous semi final encounter. The tall Scot, who had accounted for Adam Bleakley 3-1 in the last eight, threw everything at Slevin, but he didn't succumb, his accurate shot placement inflicting the damage down the flanks, to qualify for the final.

In the other half of the draw, top seed Ryan Jenkins, the current British Grand Prix champion and winner three times in the past four seasons, dropped the opening game 13-11 against Cleveland's Daniel Reed in the last eight, but took the next three, before overcoming Scotland's all action Gavin Rumgay, in the semi's.

The Pontypridd man, who was the Liverpool Open men's singles runner up to Bradley Billington in 2002, drew first blood in the final, firing down a volley of fierce winners, to win 11-9. Slevin from then on though, hardly made a mistake in the next three games, forcing errors from the well traveled world ranked 227 Welshman, to win 11-5, 11-7, 11-8. The final together with the semi-finals, were contested in tremendous fashion, and were a credit to the event and the sport in general.

Slevin Wins Liverpool Open In Style ITTA Website
Many Irish players put in a terrific performance at the Liverpool Open over the weekend

Pride of place must go to National Coach Colum Slevin who rolled back the years with a vintage display beating Kevin Dolder of England in Quarter final, Scottish No. 1 Ewan Walker in the Semi-final and Ryan Jenkins, Welsh No 1 and last seasons Battle of Britain Champion, 3-1 in the Final. The final was a reverse of the result in last years London Grand Prix and on this occasion Slevin produced superb quality table tennis and was never in trouble against any opponent.

Michele McGreevey (Ulster) reached the semi-final of the Ladies event where she lost to eventual winner Natalie Bowden.

Young Keith Knox (Ulster) reached the final of the Mens Band 4 event losing 3-1 to Thracholadis having beaten W Y Chan 11/9 in the 5th set in the semifinal . Keith had his revenge on Thracholadis later in the day in the Band 3 event where he reached the semifinal stage but lost to A Wilson the eventual winner.

Amanda Mogey was the winner of the Band 2 Singles event.

John Murphy (Leinster) had victories over G Watson 3-1, S Donnelly 3-0, and lost to Darren Reed 3-2, in the first round group, beat R Lemon 3-1 in the next round and lost to Kevin Dolder in last 32.

Conor Nolan (Leinster) beat P Woods 3-1, D Richards 3-1 and S Murray 3-0 in the Group, and G Knox 3-0 before losing to Craig Byrant on England in last 32.

Andrew Dennison (Ulster) beat R Jackson, J Collimore and J Magell, J Taylor, J Nicholls all 3-0 before losing to Adam Bleakley 3-1 in last 16.

John Cowan, making a welcome return to the game, had wins over R Norton, C Tarr, N Camoroon, A Smith and M Rodgers before losing to Gavin Rumgay 11/9 in 5th in last 16.

Peter Graham (Ulster) beat A Dunne, J Thacholadis, and C Lewis 14/12 in 5th set before losing to D Godfall in last 64.

Daryl Strong (Ulster) had wins over Clinten, Gallea, Peak and Glack before losing to Rumgay in last 64.

Marcus McDonnell (Leinster) qualified as runnerup in group and lost to Chris Ford in next round.

In Ladies Singles Tara Fusco beat S Howell 3-0 and Emily O'Sullivan, S Donnelly and Clare Langford 3-0 before losing 3-0 to Michele McGreevey in last 16.

Michele McGreevey had wins over Morley, Layfield, Hall, Fusco and Peers before losing to Natalie Bowdren 3-0 in the semifinal. Bowdren went onto win the event.

Amanda Mogey and Sabrina Conway did not qualify from their groups.

In Band 2 event Amanda Mogey had wins over Howard, Standon, Dark 3-2 and Layfield 3-2 before winning the final 3-1 against C. Steeples.

NPC’s Arthur Brett and Colum Slevin were well pleased with the performance of all players at this level of competition.

"Top performance may be influenced by birthday and by place of birth"

Irish children who have a dream to become top performers in sport could be more likely to be born earlier in the year and to come from rural or smaller towns and cities.

These are the startling trends currently being discussed at a top level, invitation-only seminar at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra. The seminar is being attended by NCTC Director, Pat Duffy and Declan O'Leary who is Head of Coaching Services at the Centre.

In one ground-breaking study, Jean Cote of the Queen's University in Kingston, Canada reported that in studies conducted in the US, Canada and Australia, it had been found that children growing up in cities of more than one million inhabitants had a significantly lower chance of making it to the top than children growing up in cities of less than 500,000 and in particular in towns between 5,000 and 50,000 in size. This phenomenon has been labelled the birthplace effect.

In a second study, Bruce Abernethy of the University of Hong Kong reported a strong over-representation of athletes born in the first half of the selection year among top Australian athletes. Calling this the birthday effect, Abernethy stated that one of the main reasons for this trend seemed to relate to the fact that coaches tended to pick the slightly older and more mature children from a very early age.

Pat Duffy stated: 'these findings have fundamental implications for the way parents, coaches and administrators go about providing sports experiences for children in Ireland. We need to conduct immediate research to establish the extent to which the birthday and the birthplace effect operate in Ireland'

He continued: 'For Ireland, the birthplace effect has potentially huge implications, given the concentration of the population in the Dublin region.'

The NCTC representatives are on a 10-day technical visit to Australia that includes the current stay at the Australian Institute, as well as presenting at the International Sports Psychology Conference in Sydney. Jean Cote, the author of the study on the birthplace effect will be a keynote speaker at the 8th National Forum that will take place at NCTC, University of Limerick between Septemberd 2 and 4 next.

York Road T.T. Club
York Road T.T. Club have a couple of vacancies for players to compete in League teams during the upcoming season.

Ideally they would like a good standard for the top divisions, but there would be room also for less accomplished players for the lower divisions. The club is based in Dun Laoghaire Co. Dublin (about 10km) from the city centre of Dublin, has 4 good tables, good lighting, a wooden floor, and is clean and warm.

The club also runs a small junior section------- ages 7 upwards. It is possible that there may be room for a limited number of children here also.

The prestigious team event in the 48 The European Youth Championships concluded Tuesday night in Sazka Arena in Prague, Czech Republic.

Instead it was a top motivated team from FRANCE coming out on top after an intense two hour’s battle. Emanuel Lebesson gave France the upper hand with an opening victory over Patric Baum 3-1 and from that point the French team never looked back moving on to win the gold medals three matches to nil.

It was disappointing for the players not to win more matches because they gave a big effort both before and during the Championships. They are in the practice hall as I write this article, even after all the disappointments of the week. They have a really good attitude and this will help them in the future.

England Cadet Boys are European Youth Champions
By Malcolm Macfarlane
What a final, about 40 British trying to out support about 600 Czechs, the supporters lost possibly but the Boys certainly did not, against a Czech Republic Team containing the European No 3 Thomas Tregler, Paul Drinkhall and Darius Knight triumphed three matches to zero. Paul beat the Czech No 2 Zatrepalek 3-0 in match 1, Darius followed up with a superb 3-1 win over Tregler in match 2 and the two boys combined to win the doubles 3-1 and take with it the European Crown so cruelly denied them last year.

In the other events three dissapointments started the day. The Cadet Girls were outclased by a very strong Moldovan side who had been unlucky to be last in a very strong initial group, they were beaten three matches to nil and therefore finished 30th

The Junior boys faced Spain, Tim Yarnall and Danny Reed lost the initial two matches but Adam Bleakley got one back in the third match, a cloose fourth match just did not go Tim's way and Spain won three matches to one. The Junior Boys therefore finished 16th

The Junior Girls had an even more titanic struggle against Belarus, Kelly Sibley was out of sorts in the first match but Joanna Parker just out defended her opponent to make the match score one to one. Abigail Embling then embarked on another tight 5 setter which she duly won, two to one and surely the match was Englands, alas it was not to be as both Jo Parker and Kelly Sibley lost long four and five set matches and Belarus took it three matches to two. The Junior Girls therefore finished 14th.
