Munster Open 2002
The Munster Open is one of the largest tournaments of the year in Ireland with both Junior and Senior Irish Ranking points at stake. This year's event will have an added international flavour with entries from China, Sweden and Poland. Local favourite and Irish No.1 Brian Fitzgerald will be looking for his second Munster Open title and last year's champion Eoin Byrne from Leinster will be looking to stop him. It may however go abroad this year with five players from the Falköping Club in Sweden being invited over by the WCTTA and Ballincollig. Fredrik Hagenstahl is No.2 Senior in his district while Fredrik Andersson won a Bronze medal at the Sydney Paralympics. The Swedish contingent will also be competing in the doubles and U21 events.

European +75 Veteran Doubles Champion Bertie Levinge from Co.Cork will be making a welcome comeback to the event. Bertie a previous winner in 1987 has been unable to play at the last two Munster Open's due to ill health. Bertie and Linda Mountjoy were presented with ITTA Bumper Packs by the Mayor of Cork at a reception at City Hall as part of the launch of the Munster Open.

Presentation of Munster Special Olympic Caps

The Munster Branch also invited Munster Special Olympic Table Tennis Co-ordinator Phyllis Naughton to the reception. She was presented with a special edition of the Munster Branch Interprovincial Colours which were presented by National Development Committee Chairman and Munster PRO Owen Kelly. The badges are to recognise the Munster Special Olympic Team for the National Games to be played this summer. The Munster Branch is currently supporting closer ties with many of the organisations that are involved in table tennis in the province including the Community Games and Special Olympics. A Munster Regional Training Centre for both Main Stream and Special Olympics has been supported by both organisations as well as Cork Corporation. Cork Corporation Sports Development Officer Larry O'Reilly was pleased to announce that the largest funding allocation given to a local sports organisation this year was to table tennis through the new Beech Hill Table Tennis Club and North Mon.

It is hoped that through the sharing of facilities and the co-ordination of local sports partnerships that table tennis will continue to benefit from the support of the Cork Corporation, Special Olympics and the ITTA.

Munster Junior Ranking, Thurles. 8-9-01
The first Munster Junior Rankings were held on the 8th September at CBS Thurles. This was the first points event that the new 11 point set system was played. A number of players were not impressed with the scoring system and it will take time to adapt to the speed and service tactics of the new system. There were a number of surprises in the event and excellent semi final in the U17 boys saw Kieran Joyce beat Chris O'Brien after first loosing to him in the final of the U14, but Killian Healy was too strong for him in the final. Newcomer Ross Griffin from Clare only narrowly lost out in the final of the U12 boys to Barry Horgan. Marie McSweeney took the U12 girls title. Andrea Shorten dominated the U14 girls event as did Linda O'Sullivan in the U17's, who beat rival Rachel O'Connor 12-10, 13-11, 10-12, 11-4 to retake the title she held last season. The event was very well attended by players from around the province and the numbers were up from last year's first event. It is hoped that this will be a good warm up for the 200-2001 Junior Interpros to be held next weekend in Dublin.

Community Games Mosney 17th and 20th August 2001
Finals - U16 Table Tennis
Community games - Gold for Ballincollig and Silver for Mayfield

Ballincollig boys table tennis team took a well deserved gold medal at this years Community Games and in doing so turned the tables, with clinical efficiency, on Mayo and Cavan, both of who had beaten them last year. In the semi-final against Mayo, Killian Healy, Eoin Hegarty and David Buckley achieved victory with a straight 4 to nil margin.

In the final against Cavan, Killian Healy, Eoin McNally and Mike Spitere produced another 4 to nil result to take the Gold Medal.

In the girls reigning champions, Mayfield, encountered much stiffer opposition in their semi-final match against an unknown Sligo team. Despite some hearth stopping moments the Cork Girls of Rachel O'Connor, Anna Moynihan and Katie McSweeney took the semi-final contest with a 4 to 1 victory.

The final against Dublin was always going to be a tight affair as these players compete against each other on a regular basis during the table tennis season. With the singles matches going to form at 3 - 3, the tie went to the wire in the doubles with the Dublin team of Grainne McKenna, Sinead Kelly, and Denise Tracey taking the doubles 9-21, 21-19, 21-17 for a 4 - 3 win over Cork Girls Rachel O'Connor, Anna Moynihan and Jessica Kelleher.

The Occasion
Ballincollig Boys Munster Final Winners and first recipients of the James Bourke Perpetual Trophy Left to Right: Mike Spitere, Killian Healy, Eoin Hegarty, Mike Bourke (Munster Community Games Director & brother of the late James Bourke), Eoin Mc Nally, Michael Buckley. The Girls from Mayfield and the Boys from Ballincollig West celebrated Bastille Day in style at the North Monastery with emphatic victories in the table tennis Community Games Provincial Finals.

Both teams and their Managers are looking forward to the National Finals in Mosney in August. Both teams will also be going for the Double. Last year the Ballincollig lads came up against a very strong Cavan team, packed with international talent, but this year revenge is to be extracted. The Mayfield girls hope to retain the Gold Medal, that they won last year.

The Results
Girls

The Cork girl's team was an all St. Angela's College selection consisting of Rachel O'Connor, Anna Moynihan, Katie McSweeney, and Jessica Kelleher.
The Cork girls met a spirited Clare team in the final, but the Clare team consisting of Roisin Johnston, Rachel Pender, and Leanne Meaney, were no match for the much more experienced Cork girls who took the title 4 - 0 without dropping a set.
Boys
Like the girls, the Cork boy's team members were all drawn from the same school, Colaiste Choilm in Ballincollig. The team consisted of Killian Healy, Mike Spitere, Eoin Hegarty, Eoin MacNally, and David Buckley. This squad of players has improved enormously in the past year with the help of Coach Ivan Shorten and their team manager Michael Healy. They made it to the final without any difficulty beating Clare 4 - 0 in the semi-final. In the other semi-final Tipperary beat Kerry by a similar margin having first beaten Limerick in the preliminary round. The final was a closer affair even though the Ballincollig lads won 4 - 0 the matches were tighter..
Thanks
Event Coordinator, Gus Coughlan and newly appointed Munster Table Tennis Association Hon. Secretary, Louise Long, ran the event most efficiently. Thanks also to the North Monastery and in particular to Con Higgins and to Liz O'Rourke, for making the hall and facilities available.

Ballydehob Open, Munster Senior Rankings.
The top Munster Senior players arrived in Ballydehob for the third day of the West Cork Table Tennis Festival. The Ballydehob Open launched the new Munster Senior Rankings and had all the major players entered. The final of the men's singles was between the favourite Brian Fitzgerald the current Irish No.1 and Mark White also ranked in the top ten. Many considered the match a formality and Brian took the first set comfortably 21/15. The good crowd was stunned by the speed of the returns in the second game with some very good backhand winners by the youngster Mark White. Brian tried to come back from a five-point deficit but Mark took the winner with a fine forehand drive. The final set saw Brian take a dominant lead and at the 11 point change over it was unlikely that Mark would be able to get back into the match. Brian who had not played in West Cork for 10 years took the gold medal, he will soon be leaving Ireland for the lights of Paris, France. J.P.Murphy of Macroom was the highest placed West Cork entrant picking up a third place along with Cork Veteran Dan Foley. J.P.Murphy and Paul Lynch were surprise finalists against Brian Fitzgerald and Mark White in the doubles and collected a fine second place. Brian picked up his third gold medal when he teamed up with Linda Mountjoy in the Mixed doubles, with both players holding top honours at National level it was unlikely they would be toppled. Mark White and Linda O'Sullivan produced a fine doubles final against them and almost caused the sensation of the tournament. Linda added add to her fine mixed doubles victory, beating Louise Long, who had beat the No.1 in the opening group. Linda recovered to make the final and reverse the earlier result. Linda failed to collect her third gold when she teamed up with Fiona Higgins in the Ladies doubles event. Linda O'Sullivan and Louise long took the gold medal.

An extra event was added to the Ballydehob Open, a "family doubles" was run and four families took part. Dan and Alan Hurley, a father and son combination defeated the father and daughter combination of Kurt and Kloe Wood. Third and fourth places went to mother and son Vicky and Jack Smiles and brothers Joe and Jake Warne.

Munster Junior Rankings September 24th 2000,
Thurles CBS, Tipperary

The first Munster Rankings took place in Thurles. Over 30 travelled from Cork and West Cork to play with the Tipperary players. The major suprise of the event would be the first win for Paul Twomey at U17. Paul played Johnny McCarthy in an exciting final. Good performances from P.J.Hurley saw him take third while Cian Gleeson resumed his good form of last year finishing 4th. The girls U17 saw Linda O'Sullivan retain her No.1 ranking as expected beating Sandra Morris in the final. This was a good result for Sandra who moves up to No.2 from 5th last seaon. Rachel O'Connor who has moved up from U14 beat off the challange from an in form Jenna Mehigan-Collins, they finished 3/4th respectivly. The U17 rankings saw excellent results from our U14 and U12 girls. This set up the U14 girls event with a good final between Jenna and Emma Jane Helen, which Jenna confidently took. A great performance from U12 Andrea Shorten saw her take third with Jackie Rea taking 4th. The U14 Boys was dominated by the "Ballincollig Boys". Killian Healy retained his U14 title with Eoin Hegarty moving up the rankings to take 2nd from Eoin McNally 3rd, Mike Spitere came in 4th. The lads obviously benefitted from their performance at the Community Games.
The Junior Table Tennis Show moves on to Dublin for the first Irish Junior Rankings on 7-8th October, with the next Munster Junior Ranking not till 16-17th December at the Cork Closed.

U16 Table Tennis

Report by Rory O'Connor.

For Full Photo Click Here.Cork U-16 Boys table tennis team from Ballincollig and Girls table tennis team from Mayfield who participated in the Community Games Finals at Mosney Killian Healy, Rick O'Mahony (County Manager), David Buckley, Mike Spitere, Aisling Healy, Rachel O'Connor, Eoin Hegarty, Patsy McNally, Anna Moynihan, Eoin McNally, Michael Healy (Ballincollig Team Manager), Leah Lenihan.

Cork produced the Munster representatives at U16 table tennis for the community games which were held in Mosney from the 26th to the 28th August 2000.

The Weather
For the most part, and unlike the weather in my report from the Munster finals in Listowel, the weather was like a sunny day in one of the South African townships on the outskirts of Capetown. For those planning a trip to Mosney check out the facilities of rows SO and SP and you'll understand where I'm coming from.

The Teams The boys team, from Ballincollig, consisted of David Buckley, Killian Healy, Eoin Hegarty, Eoin MacNally, and Mike Spitere. The girls, representing Mayfield community games, consisted of, Leah Lenihan, Anna Moynihan, and Rachel O'Connor.

The Results The result of the boys tournament was never in doubt with Gold going to the very strong Cavan team of Sean Brady, Peter Fitzpatrick, Sean Fitzpatrick, Ronan Flanagan and Dane Smith. Silver went to Dublin. Ballina took the Bronze from Cork in the very last match.

While many of their opponents may not be eligible next year this very young team from Ballincollig will be around for a few years and no doubt will bring medals back next time out.

The Cork girls kept up the tradition set by Glanmire and brought back the Gold to Cork for the fourth consecutive Year beating Cavan in the semi-final and Ferns TT from Wexford in the Final.

The Craic For the first time at Community games a new yellow coloured drug called the "Yellow Card" was allowed. The red version may be allowed next year. This new drug was administered for the very first time by the Cork boys table tennis manager who for legal reasons shall remain nameless. This "Yellow Card" when given at the appropriate time works like as a homing device similar to that used by racing pigeons.

It is generally administered after dark but may also be administered the following morning as the symptoms are not always discovered immediately. It is particularly beneficial when the recipient has lost all track of time and direction. This is a syndrome which is most likely to be found in table tennis players late at night. It particularly effects boys and girls from counties Cork and Cavan. Other symptoms consist of deafness that results in the occasional inability to process instructions involving times and directions. The deafness is also accompanied by increased appetite for 17" Pizzas and sleeplessness resulting in aimless perambulating in search of something different such as the members of the Cork Variety group.

The immediate results of the drug were effective in certain cases however further trials may need to be carried out in the future including the introduction of the "Red" in order to sustain a more lasting cure.

Thanks The Ballincollig and Mayfield team Managers would like to thank Rick O'Mahony and Mary Connolly of the Cork Community games and Barry Hill of sponsors C.M.P. Daries for their help over the course of the weekend.

Community Games Listowel 8th July 2000
- Munster Finals -
U16 Table Tennis

The Weather
On a day that resembled a bad Summer's day in the southern hemisphere two teams from Cork travelled to Listowel to compete for the right to represent their County and Province at the National Community Games Finals in Mosney at the end of August.

The Results
The girl's team was an all St. Angela's College selection consisting of Rachel O'Connor, Anna Moynihan, Evelyn O'Connor and Leah Lenihan representing the Mayfield Community Association area. In the 1st semi the Cork girls received a walkover, as the Kerry girls failed to turn up. The 2nd semi was won by Limerick, who beat their neighbours Clare, but they failed to impress in the final against the much more experienced Cork girls who took the title 4 - 0 without dropping a set.

Like the girls, the Cork boy's team members were all drawn from the same school, Colaiste Choilm in Ballincollig. The team consisted of Killian Healy, Eoin Hegarty, Eoin MacNally, and David Buckley. In the 1st semi they had good victory over the Tipperary boys drawn from Thurles Table Tennis Club. The other semi was a victory for Limerick over Clare but they like the Limerick girls they were no match in the final for the Cork boys who took the title 4 - 0.

Brian Fitzgerald To Take On The World.
Brian who has topped the Irish senior rankings has been selected for Ireland to compete at the World Team Event Championships. We hope to receive some further news on this from Brian soon.

Disappointment For Linda
Linda Mountjoy who is currently ranked No.2 in Ireland and has an excellent International record failed to make the Ladies Team for the World Team Championships later this year. Her coach Ben Haughton was terribly disappointed for her after she has put so much effort into her training this year. Watch out for a backlash at the Munster Open where Linda will feel she may feel she has something to prove.

Kinneigh Club with their 40+ Trophies
Kinneigh Club's Record 3-1-2000
From Lee Ping a West Cork Correspondant............A remarkable record was set by the Kinneigh Table Tennis Club when all 12 titles were won at the Cork Interparochial Championships in Clonakilty.
This is an incredible record to achieve and speaks highly for the very talented juniors in the club. In the U16, Brian Horgan held on for victory in the boys' singles, for the second year running over club sparring partner Alan Hurley. It was reversed in the boys' U14 singles when Alan and Brian met in the semi-final, but the long rallies had to be seen to be believed.
The girls U14 saw Rebecca Shorten come of age and do the business against Emma Jane Helen in the singles. However Emma Jane dictated when the U16 title came up for discussion against team mate Anne Baker
The hero of the week (in this scribe's memory) was, undoubtably, the outstanding performance oby Barry Horgan in the U12 final. Having won the first game, he nearly came a cropper in the second game. Playing Shane Buttimer at 14-18 he came back to 19 all winning 24-22. At only ten years of age, this young man displayed the cool head of someone twice his age.
The two strongest juniors at the championships were Alan Hurley and Brian Horgan. The boy's doubles were won by Alan partnered by Richard Roycroft.
Alan also picked up a second in the U14 mixed playing with Clare Sweetnam. This competition was won by Brian Horgan, playing with Heather buttimer. Brian also took third place in the U14 singles and third in the boy's doubles, partnered by alan Jennings.
The U14 girls' doubles went to Emma Jane Helen and Sharon Kingston who beat Rebecca Shorten and Heather Buttimer, while Emma also picked up first place in the U16 girls doubles with Freda Buttimer.
In the U16 girls doubles Rebecca Shorten and Gillian Roycroft got third place while Rebecca also took third with Anne Baker in the girls doubles.
In the U12 boys doubles, Barry Horgan did excellent work with Martin Hurley to get second place while in the girls doubles while in the girls U12 Andrea Shorten was an easy winner against a stylish Sharon Kingston.
Before the weekend the Kinneigh Club held a disco in Big foot's and it was a tremendous success.

West Cork at the Leinster Junior Open
At the weekend four juniors and two coaches went to Dublin to play in the Leinster Junior Open in Clontarf. The highlights were Andrea Shorten coming 4th in Ireland, who had the added pleasure in overcoming the Irish No.1 at U12. Alan Hurley got into the top 15 with some great performances, especially when he overcame Eoin Hegarty, Cork.
In the U14, Emma Jane Helen had a tough draw against Rebecca Lord, but still took her to 3 sets. Later on this girl was beaten in the final by Rachael O'Connor, Cork.
Playing in her first such competition, Rebecca Shorten won her first game at U17 level on Saturday. On Sunday she played in the plate competition, but lost narrowly on count back. Everyone learnt from the experience. One other player who failed to travel due to illness was Jack Smiles.
These performances in Dublin, allied to the Cork Interparochials means a lot more players from West Cork area can hold their heads high and show their talent by competing at this level.
Goleen TTC entered for the first time and took a squad of 10 players.

Munster Senior Rankings 21/11/99
Jim Conroy was the suprise winner of the Munster Senior Rankings and moves up to 3rd place in the rankings after defeating Tom Elliott in the final. Some notable absentees were attending a Senior Training Camp on the day but there was a good entry from around the province.
In the ladies event there was also a shock defeat of Linda Mountjoy by up and coming junior Linda O'Sullivan. This is the first ranking that Ms Mountjoy has attended and has lost out on the No.1 spot. However she still retains here overall lead in the rankings. The complete up to date rankings are available on the rankings page.

Munster Junior Rankings At St.Angelas College, Cork. 20/11/99
Killian Healy took the No.1 spot after an exciting final in the Cadet boys section after defeating Eoin McNally in an exciting final. It is the first time a defensive styled player has won the Cadet boys section for some time. However Eoin retains his No.1 place overall. The U12 girls had a very poor attendance with Andrea Shorten beating Kloe Wood in the final placings. the U12 Boys saw Stephen Buckley beat Colin Shields in a final of a high standard. Rachael O'Connor and Maria O'Sullivan still dominate the two top places when they met once again in a thrilling final, Rachael finally won out. In the Junior Boys Gary Noonan took advantage of the absence of No.1 Mark White to take the overall top place when he defeated Jim Conroy in the final. In the Junior Girls Louise Long has proved to be the most consistant taking her second ranking win against Linda O'Sullivan. Nothing is certain however and the next rankings will take place at The North Mon. on December 11-12th.

Joy for Linda in Connacht Senior Open 6/11/99
Linda Mountjoy caused something of a shock when defeating No.1 Brioni Lane at the Connacht Senior Open. Linda won in a thriller, winning in the third set 21/18.
Meanwhile at the first Munster Junior Championships held in the North Mon. large entries participated in each age group. Scoil Eoin had a double in the under 14 boys with Eoin McNally defeating Derek O'Rourke in a thriller in division one while Anthony Walsh was successful in claiming the division 2 title. The under 17 boys final saw Irish No.1 Mark White defeat Irish No.1 under 14 Jonathan McCarthy. Some of the rallies in the final were breathtaking. Rachael O'Connor had a busy weekend reaching both the U14 & U17 final. She won the U14 title but Louise Long defeated her in the U17 final. David Walsh won the Boys U17 Division 2 title in a great tussle with Alan Hurley winning 22/20 in the third set. All roads lead to Craigavon next weekend for the Ulster Open.
