The legends surrounding Slieve Gullion are rich in Danaan magic and mysticism. Residing in one of the cairns was Milucra a daughter of Cullen the smith. Both her and her sister Aine were in love with the great hero Finn Mac Cumhal. Milucra decided to use Danaan magic to secure Finn for herself, by turning him into an old man knowing her sister would never marry anyone with grey hair. She assembled a party of Danaan people together around the lake at the top of the mountain and gave the waters of the lake magical properties. Finn was enjoying the day's chase when he arrived at the top of Slieve Gullion to see a beautiful lady sitting beside the lake crying. She told Finn that she had lost her ring in the lake so he dived in to retrieve it. when he stepped out he turned into an old man. The fianna, Finns warriors had to dig down deep into the cairn to reach Milucra who was standing inside and offered Finn a drink from a drinking horn made of red gold. Finn Mac Cumhal returned to health but kept his grey hair.
