Ireland is situated in the Atlantic Ocean and separated from Great Britain by the Irish Sea. Ireland resembles a basin - a central plain rimmed with mountains. The area of Ireland spreads across 70,280 sq.km. Irelands climate is always very moderate as prevailing warm, moist winds from the Alantic Ocean cause cold winters ranging from 4-7'C. They even influence the summer temperatures as they range from 15-17'C on average. This makes Ireland have the lower temperatures than that of other places, which are at the same latitude. The rainfall on average in Ireland is 1 016 millimetres a year. These influences as the temperature and the rainfall have a great impact on the land and resources Ireland has and produces. The introduction of agriculture to Ireland was in 3500 BC by the Neolithic settlers, now in the 90's Irelands principal crops are turnips, barley, potatoes, sugar beets, wheat, animal produce which include meat and diary items. These crops grow well in Ireland because of the climate and the large amount of rainfall they receive. Foods that are on storage in Ireland are such products as wheat grain, fruit and vegetables. But Ireland is still around 85 per cent self-sufficient with their food, even through the population is on average 3,632,944 and is naturally growing steadily at 0.52 per cent every year. The natural resources that are naturally produced in Ireland are zinc, lead, natural gas, barite, copper, gypsum, limestone, dolomite, peat and silver. Many which are used in the lives of most Irish everyday. Ireland does have very good land and resources which they support themselves with, but when it comes down to exporting goods, Irelands trade mainly consists in the exports of such products as chemicals, data-processing equipment and industrial machinery. But they do also export a small amount of livestock and animal products. Irelands environment is also a very important issue to the Irish, as Ireland has the quality of being very clean. As Ireland is predominately rural, it has very few environmental problems, therefore leading to even better produce growing and being produced within Ireland. |
