PHIBSBORO

There is some doubt about where the name Phibsborough originates. Some say that it was given by the people who lived at Wood Salocks which extended from Oxmantown near where Phibsboro is now. The Rev. C. J. McCready says the present name Phibsboro is from Edward Phipps, the fourth son of Richard Phipps of Kilmainham who died in 1629. Edward Phipps is said to have got the land in 1790 and given it the family name.

Doyles Corner

This is perhaps the most famous landmark in Dublin 7. The stretch of road from Blackquiere Bridge to Doyles Corner was called Madras Place. Before it was Doyles Corner it was called Dunphy’s Corner. During the sixties there was a chronic traffic problem. They replaced the single overhead traffic control light called the ‘Winking Willie’ with traffic lights.

Dalymount

Dalymount Park was officially opened 7 September 1901. This is Bohemians Football Club home ground and is the oldest football club in Ireland. The field where Dalymount Park is at the moment was common land where the residents grew vegetables on one side and the other side was used by the local youths as a playground. The ground was a field with one side for the fans - the changing room was a tent! In 1927/8 a new steel stand was erected. In 1962 they got floodlights.
