Book Description
Beautiful! Makes Alexander concepts visible., February 6, 2000
Reviewer: A reader from Nashville, Tennessee
This book not only has many illustrations of how Alexander principles might look in action, it's a beautiful and well-laid-out book. With all the pictures, I have a better idea of what I might be going toward as I take Alexander lessons. I still think it is true that you cannot learn Alexander technique without a teacher - most of the time I find that the way I think I am moving or standing is not what my body is actually doing - but I still find the pictures and directions give me something to move towards. The illustrations are also useful in trying to explain to others what the Alexander technique is about. I recommend this highly along with Deborah Caplan's "Back Trouble".

Reader Review
Scientific, yet wanting in certain areas, January 4, 2000
Reviewer: A reader from New Jersey
This is a very interesting read on the benefits of the Technique, but it doesn't describe the Technique itself as in-depth as it could. For instance, Mr. Barlow consistently refers to Alexander's fundamental principle ("Use affects functioning.") to describe causes of various maladies, but he leaves the reader somewhat lost as to the steps to improve one's use. His insights into the causes of disease and malfunction, however, are definitely worth the read.

Book Description
An accessible guide to improving riding skills at all levels using the Alexander Technique. Featuring 90 photos and drawings. The Alexander Technique, founded over a century ago to enhance the way we breathe and move, is becoming increasingly popular as the importance of the mind-body connection gains acceptance. Now, this innovative guide combines Alexander principles with thorough riding instruction to help riders improve their skills on horseback. Following a short introduction to the Alexander Technique, Sally Tottle clearly and concisely explains posture, muscle tone and sensitivity, breathing, balance, sense of feel, the independent seat, horse and rider communication, and poise in performance. Filled with crisp photos and detailed drawings, BodySense will help both novice and experienced riders to improve their position and, as a result, the performance of their horse. Sally Tottle is a certified teacher of the Alexander Technique as well as a riding instructor; she teaches BodySense courses at her home in England.

Reader Review
The cream of 4 books on mind-body integration, August 17, 1997
Reviewer: bohdanh@aol.com from Miami Beach, FL
Got a hurting back or evil golf or tennis swing you can't get rid of? F.M. Alexander found a way to change bad body use and this book describes what it means and how it was discovered. No, reading the book won't cure you. You'll need Alexander lessons, but it will tell you what it's all about. The editor wrote a fine background introduction as well as made an excellent selection from Alexander's books. Just as important, he included three prefaces by John Dewey, the famous educator and philosopher, and also scientific research on the technique. The technique is more than some body process. It really teaches a Western Zen approach towards all kinds of life problems. Sound strange? Read this book. I'm very grateful I had Alexander lessons and the wisdom it teaches. Highly recommended.

BoMi-Content: Combining awareness, vocal clarity and body movement, F. Matthias Alexander developed a performance coaching method used today by dancers, actors, and singers as well as by ordinary people ... it works on our Sixth Sense (kinesthesia: the sense of body movement and position) bringing it back to awareness.
