Pet Care

Before you get a Dog or Puppy you should consider these points:

Dog and Puppy care

Print versionPrint Version
  • Dogs need companionship. Will there be someone at home for most of the day, everyday?

  • Daily exercise is crucial. Have you got the time to take your dog for regular walks?

  • Dogs can be very expensive to keep. It can cost anything from £1- £2 depending on your dogs size. Will you be able to afford to feed your dog properly everyday for the rest of its life?

  • Freedom is important. Have you an escape proof garden where your dog can play and that you'll keep clean ?

  • Dogs need time. House training, simple obedience training, exercise and grooming all take time. Can you really spare it?

  • Will you be able to pay for vaccinations and other veterinary bills? Might you consider taking out pet insurance? All dogs should be vaccinated against serious diseases and the CSPCA recommends that dogs and bitches should be neutered to stop them producing puppies which may not be able to get good homes.

  • Are you willing to pay for boarding kennels at holiday time if you're unable to take your dog or puppy with you?

Advice for Dog Owners:

A good pet owner will look after his/her pets everyday. If you play with your dog regularly, you will get to know their likes and dislikes. As you become good friends it will become easier to notice if something is wrong with your pet. If changes in an animals behaviour or appearance worry you, take it to the vet immediately. Regular care and attention is the best way to keep your dog healthy.

We recommend that if you own a pet you should buy a book on how to care for it properly. Alternatively you might be able to get this book in your local library.
