Gerbil Care

Print VersionPrint Version

Before you get a Gerbil you should consider these points:

  • Gerbils live in groups in the wild. You should therefore keep two gerbils(make sure they're the same sex or you'll have lots of baby gerbils soon). Are you willing to do this?

  • Gerbils need daily feeding. Are you prepared to do this ?

  • Their cage must be kept in a warm room. You must tidy their home everyday and clean it thoroughly on a regular basis. Will you remember to do this ?

  • Do you know someone who will look after your gerbil when you go away on holiday?

Advice for Gerbil owners:

A good pet owner looks after his/her gerbil everyday. If you play with your gerbil regularly, you will get to know its likes and dislikes and its usual behaviour. If you think that your gerbil is off form or is not acting like its usual self you should consider calling a vet for advice or bringing your gerbil to a vet.

We recommend that if you own a pet you should buy a book on how to care for it properly. Alternatively you might be able to get a book in your local library.
