WANTED

My husband is a forester here in the USA (bachelor's degree from Univ. of New Hampshire and Master's Degree from North Carolina State Univ.). We would love an opportunity to exchange with another forester - perhaps in Ireland for 6 months to one year (sort of a job switch - my husband is faculty at a small forestry college in Pennsylvania but has also been a forestry consultant in addition to acting as a timber manager for his parent's 300 acre timber land in New Hampshire). I would love to see "want ads" in your classifieds or hear from others who may be interested in an exchange of this sort. Thank You, Catherine Houghton, Web Developer / Designer, Shippensburg University,

Dear Timber Folk,
Greetings from the USA. Forks, Washington that is. I was pleasantly suprised to find an Irish timber industry mag on the web. I am not suprised that it is so well done though. Three of our company's young men will be coming over in December/ January, Ireland being #1 on their list to visit. They hoped to meet Irish loggers & other industry colleagues, observe your logging techniques & participate in cultural exchange,(& visit a few relatives too).

Our family's business is in contract logging. This past year we have been hosting the logging tours in our town's timber tour program. This is a way to explain our industry to a rather hostile public who sees logging , "murdering trees & destroying ecosystems" as a crime :-) We have had very good results. People like to be told the truth & love to see it in action. (We specialize in tower/cable yarding, so there is quite a variety of jobs to watch and learn about). We have been happy to host people from all over the world & help them learn about the timber industry, in particular the rain forests of the NW US. We are members of Washington (state) Contract Loggers Association.

Please let us know if any of your group would mind a visit "at work" by some not so hostile American loggers who are quite eager to see how the rest of the world logs & manages their timber. If you folks have any questions we would be more than happy to answer them. Thank you for your time & attention.
Sincerely, Mrs. Maria Soha, Sec./ Treas. of S & S Log Co., Inc.

If you would like to host a visit by "not so hostile" US loggers please email us here at the IT&F offices for more info.
