Services to the Elderly

Lions Mosney Holiday

Every June, approximately the Lions of our District head to Mosney Holiday Centre with 1,000 guests from all over Ireland. This holiday is provided for the old and lonely . It is a wonderful week of fun and friendship. The guests participate in many activities such as talent competitions, dancing, bingo and sing-songs and much more besides. They are looked after by 200 Lions and helpers, who accompany them for the week. Thurles Lions have been taking part in this project for many years and bring 28 to 30 guests each year.  Our annual Church Gate Collection helps to alleviate the costs of this project. This years holiday will take place between June 13th. and June 20th.

Birthday Visits

Thurles Lions visit elderly people in the local area each month on their birthdays. The only criteria is that these people are living on their own. The Lions will call and bring a small gift and will enjoy a chat with the recipient. If you know of such a person  who would like a visit, please email the name and address, as well as the persons birthday to this site.

Hospital Visitation

The members of our Club, accompanied by the Leos, visit the local Hospital  of the Assumption
regularly. During these visits, they go around the wards and chat to the people there. It is a most enjoyable and interesting project and the Lions are always pleased to listen to the many stories that the senior citizens share.

Christmas Parties

At Christmas time each year, some members of the Club visit all the local nursing homes and the Hospital of the Assumption. They provide entertainment for their audiences and it is usually a very enjoyable and sociable occasion.

Over 55s Talent Competition

This is a talent competition specifically for those people over the age of 55. It has been in existance for many years and Thurles Lions have been participating since its inception. The participants may sing, tell some jokes, play an intrument or recite a poem, or indeed put on any form of entertainmend. The local people perform at different regional events. RTE (our national  TV Station) send their talent scouts to these regional competitions and chose some of the participants to perform on teleivision in the national final. The winner of this competition receive many valuable prizes.
