Floor Maintenance

    1. The tiler will have waxed and shined the floor with Beeswax Polish before the floor is completed.

    2. The floor can be swept with a brush, as with a normal floor.

    3. If it loses it's shine due to foot traffic marks, it can be buffed-up by putting a dry cotton rag on the floor and rubbing it with a sweeping-brush, or by shining it with a large shoe-shine brush, or by the use of a mechanical buffer - depending on the area.

    4. The kind of marks which occur on the tiles are scuff marks, chair marks, oil marks, cigarette marks and general soiling.  As with clothes, some marks will be found to be more stubborn than others.  Tackle the mark first of all with the Beeswax Polish.  Apply to a cotton cloth and rub to the area, rubbing in a circular motion, until the dirt is removed from the tile.  With a clean part of the cloth, wax the entire tile in a circular motion, outwards to the edges.  More stubborn spots can be removed with Natural Surfaces Degreasing Agent applied to the floor and rubbed with a cloth.  The surface must be allowed to dry, re-waxed and shined afterwards.  Cigarette marks can be removed with HG Spot Remover.

    5. When you want to wash the floor rinse a sponge mop in a bucket of warm water, which has been mixed with a mild hand soap, or Lux flakes.   Wipe the entire area, taking up the surface dirt.  Allow to dry.  Wax the floor with Natural Surfaces Beeswax or alternatively add a thimbleful of HG Superfloor to a bucket of clean water and wipe over the entire area.   This will dry to a glaze.

    6. Many people and cleaners make the mistake of using Flash/Domestos and industrial detergents that only remove the wax and cause the floor to stain.  In a domestic situation the floor need only be re-waxed after one has had a lot of visitors, such as Christmas or party-time.

    7. In a commercial situation such as a pub, waxing is recommended once a fortnight due to the density of traffic.  In this situation a mechanical cleaning machine, which washes and shines facilitates cleaning and is a lot quicker and less hard work than deck brushes.

    8. If the surface of the tile scratches, or is chipped by a falling object the following procedures apply; in the case of Catalan Terracotta apply Boiled Linseed Oil to the spot with a cloth and for Santa Ana, use Brown Sealer on the area.  Allow to dry for a couple of hours and then wax over the tile and shine.

    9. The overall look of the terracotta floor will have an aged appearance, with a matt to satin shine as time goes on, giving a warm homely atmosphere
