Local Issues

  • Vandalism, Something unfortunately on the increase and affecting everyone in town. We must work to eliminate the climate in which vandals thrive
  • Drugs: Again on the increase, the Gardai must be assisted by every means possible to combat this.
  • Environment Litter: We have a litter problem which is being addressed but more needs to be done.
  • Green spaces: Our green spaces in town are disappearing and not being replaced this has to be reversed
  • Playground: A town our size needs a decent area in which our children can play under supervision.
  • Pedestrian crossings: This is absolutely crazy, that we have so many dangerous crossings that could be made safe with a pedestrian crossing. Officials are dragging their feet on this one. This is a priority.
  • Town Development: Our town is developing at a rapid pace and our infrastructure can not keep up, this has to be treated more even-handedly to avoid creating more problems.
  • Parking: At the moment it is impossible to park in the town center, We need more parking maybe even multi-story parking.
  • Rubbish Collection, There is no reason why this can not be done in the evenings; we can’t keep interrupting traffic in the busy town center.
  • Traffic Management, Our towns one way system and traffic lights are in my opinion only making things worse, not better, this needs fixing straight away.
  • Railway line / Station: Our rail line needs upgrading immediately its ridiculous that in this day and age that it take 4 hours to get to Dublin on the train.
  • Condition of Roads Pathways and derelict buildings: This is a constant battle, and often only for basic things, I am a great believer in fixing the small things, it displays a caring attitude.
  • Tourism: Our town has a lot to offer tourists, Lough Lannagh Village for example, And soon Turlough House will open, We can do so much more when we really want to,
  • Local facilities/ services: Some of our towns services need upgrading badly e.g., the post office and the pool
  • Urban Boundaries services rates etc: It is high time that the urban boundary was extended properly, this is distorting our town’s development.
  • Education our schools: our schools are one of the resources we can not afford to neglect, Castlebar is well served with forward looking schools, but some are still lacking much needed facilities.
  • Jobs retail industrial office etc: Our young people need jobs locally, which means they will not have to immigrate. I am committed to attracting new industry to the town.
