A Ard-mheara, Seanoiri agus Comhairleoiri

1 refer to the following motion referred to the Committee by Council:-

FIRE STATION
SERVICING THE BISHOPSTOWN, WILTON, GLASHEEN, TOGHER AREA

"That this Council, acknowledging the need for a Local Fire Station, servicing the Bishopstown, Wilton, Glasheen, Togher areas, request the Manager to report on possible site locations, size, and likely date on its construction/operation in view of its urgency to ensure quick response to the locality of a very high population density including the University Hospital, Cork Institute of Technology, -FAS and the many industrial units, shopping centres housing estates etc. located in the area."

(Proposer: Comhairleoir B. Bermingham - Ref. 02/202)

Having regard to enhancing the emergency response in the Western suburbs the Fire Department have for some time been in correspondence with the Department of the Environment and Local Government regarding the provision of a Sub Fire Station in the Western suburbs.

It is envisaged that the Sub Station will be similar to the Ballyvolane Sub Fire Station.

Not only would this new Sub Station provide fire cover in the Western suburbs for a vast and growing suburban population and a large number of major industries/services but it would also provide increased cover for the City Centre by an emergency response coming from different directions.

Possible sites have been considered however there is a difficulty in obtaining a suitable location. The matter is being actively looked at with a view to acquiring land in the Western suburbs on which a Sub Fire Station can be built.

JOHN RYAN

CHIEF FIRE OFFICER

TO EACH MEMBER OF THE COMMITTEE

1 ask the Conmiittee to consider this report and recommend it to Council for approval.
