(Proposer: Comhairleoir B. Bermingham Ref. 99/135) I lodged a motion on the Viaduct hoping that both City & County Councils would agree to act together as a joint Millennium project, but this was not to be. Following continuing representations to the County Manager Mr. Maurice Maloney since 1999, within the last few weeks Mr. Maloney agreed to again speak to the County engineer on the matter. I am awaiting a response; in the meantime I will again put down a motion, VIADUCT 19.9 Motion 02/191 "Further to my previous motion 99/135 resulting in correspondence between Cork City Council and -Cork County Council this Council again- calls on Cork County council to upgrade this magnificent landmark, assessing its structure for safety, cleaning and floodlighting it, acknowledging the symbolic and historic landmark that is the Viaduct, in terms of its, Civil Engineering feat and its Communication, Transport and Social History. Resulting in 1. The enhancement of Cork's heritage. 2. Acting as a gateway to Cork City and West Cork (depending on the direction one is travelling). 3. Taking its place as a premier landmark in this region. 4. Facilitate its image being incorporated with pride in the brochures and promotional literature of various local bodies.'
