About Cork

Cork is the second city in Ireland with a population of approx 140,000 people. Founded in the 6th Century by St. Finbarr, Cork city centre is built on an island in the River Lee, just upstream of Cork Harbour.

A university city for over 150 years, Cork is justly proud of it’s history, and there are many historically interesting sites open to the public.

These include St Finn Barre’s Cathedral, St Annes Shandon, Cork City Gaol Interpretative Centre, Cork Vision Centre and the City Museum

A short distance from the city are Blarney Castle, Cobh Heritage Centre, Ballincollig Gunpowder Mills and Midleton Distillery.

Cork is firmly established on the international festival circuit with events such as the Cork Jazz Festival, Choral Festival, Film Festival and Folk festival..

Cork city centre is the shopping capital of the South West and has recently been rejuvenated with the provision of pedestrianised shopping precincts right at it’s vibrant heart. These nicely complement the historic covered “English Market” and the open air “Coal Quay” market.

Cork has it’s own international airport and there are ferry sailings to and from Britain and mainland Europe. Cork was European Capital of Culture for 2005.
