Speech by the Deputy Lord Mayor of Cork

 Ladies and Gentlemen.

I am delighted to represent the City of Cork as Deputy Lord Mayor at this award ceremony this afternoon.

Introduction

May I congratulate, Carey international oil-well training & Engineering Ltd, for facilitating Training in the Oil Industry since the early 90’s, I understand?

Your training courses are aimed at oil companies with whom you have a long-standing relationship in Libya, the Middle East and Russia.

You have trained many of their managers and training managers over the years. Well done

 Cork City

I am delighted to welcome you, belatedly; to Cork City and hope you are having an enjoyable experience.

You are witnessing a City is in the throes of change and development-so much transformation in all aspects of life in Cork.

·      A vast improvement in road infrastructure and quality surface so essential for business is taking place before our eyes.

·      New traffic flows.

·      The renewal of our principle street is about to commence with the completion of the main drainage scheme ensuring crystal clear water.

·      The island, the area between the 2 channels of the river Lee is in the process of renewal and part pedestrianisation.

·      The Railway station is about to be upgraded and turned about, towards the city.

·      The City Dockland is due to experience a most exciting, and major development.

·      A culture and atmosphere of enterprise and innovation has grown over the last few years, in Electronics, pharmaceutical & health products, manufacturing, technology, finance, brewing and many other services.

·      An excellent infrastructure in sporting educational shopping and other facilities encouraging many to set up home in this region.

I hope you have experienced Cork’s vibrancy

Cork is now a dynamic vibrant European festival city, a provincial capital economically artistically & culturally thriving, developing and expanding increasingly self-confidant.

The feeling and atmosphere of cosmopolitism grows each day with the film & choral festivals beginning that trend in the 1950’s to the present day with you, and with so many Europeans and peoples from all parts of the globe visiting, training and settling here.

In this respect Carey International makes its contribution to cultural diversity and foreign income into the City – well done

I hope the Cork, I have described is what you are finding.

 Certification

I am looking forward to the presentation of certificates to you.

I understand that you have completed a 7-month Electrical and Instrumentation training for Oilfield applications.

The effort expended is very worthwhile as part of your own development and skill building, for the oil industry and your own personal development.

The Course aimed to develop further your mechanical skills and prepare you for supervisory and management roles in the future.

Your Course included topics such as computer applications AutoCAD-computer training and design, Project and General Management and Safety Management,

Health & Safety is such an important topic nowadays with fatalities and injuries at an unacceptable level.

In Ireland, employees in the Construction & agricultural Industry are most at risk.

I’m unsure about the Oil Industry or the facts from Libya, but there is a heavy onus on the state, employer’s, union’s, management and employees and the general public to ensure a high awareness and importance of safety in the workplace.

 The Environment

Ireland was among the leaders in Europe in establishing an independent EPA [environmental protection agency] with such wide-ranging functions to protect our environment, including the Licensing and Control of large-scale activities, having the potential to cause significant environmental pollution.

We must all, industry and Government, be prepared to substantially reduce the number of incidents polluting the natural environment.

Your role in Management in time will allow you

1.  To exert influence on you’re Company Repsol Oil Operations of Libya, and the oil industry throughout the world.

2.  “To promote and implement the highest practicable standards and “best practice” in safety & environmental protection in an otherwise potentially dangerous Industry.

 ·      Our Economy is driven by oil

·      Our Society is sustained at a high standard, by Oil

·      Our lives are maintained and prolonged, by a healthy environment.

The balance is in your hands.
