First Annual Report:
The first Annual Meeting of the Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals was held at the
Royal Cork Instituition, on Thursday, the 18th of January 1872,
The Mayor in the chair.
The Mayor, in opening the meeting, observed that it had been for a long time a disgrace to
them that in a civilised country, and in such an important City as Cork, no Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals existed, but rejoiced to say that the want had been supplied.
He observed that the Officer of the Society has been during the past year very active, for he perceived that he had interfered in 224 cases,
out of which there were 69 convictions, and a large number of the remainder were cautioned.
The
real value of these convictions was not confined to the effect produced by them on the persons
convicted, but extended to that far larger number who thereby became cognisant of the fact that
there was a Society in existence for preventing Cruelty to Animals, and that such cruelty would
not be tolerated in Cork.
The Secretary was then called to read the Report, as follows:-
"The Committee have to congratulate the subscribers on the success, and already present
usefulness of the Society, and to thank them sincerely for the liberal subscriptions which,
in many instances, were voluntarily offered. As a proof of the actual necessity for endeavouring
to put a stop to the many acts of cruelty practised in Cork and the neighbourhood, no less than
227 cases were dealt with during the past year, as will appear by the particulars herewith;
and the Committee, desirous of still
further extending the work, feel most anxious to employ a second Constable, if sufficient
subscriptions can be provided to defray the additional expense of about from £25 to £30 per
annum.
They hope, therefore, that in soliciting larger and more numerous contributions for the
year 1872, it will meet with the approval of all interested in the cause, while it will still
futher tend to carry out the objects of the Society. They also wish to thank the ladies
who have during the past year so kindly assisted in obtaining subscriptions, ans solicit
their kind co-operation for the furure in helping to obtain the increased funds required. The
Ladies' Commitee of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in London having
most liberally made a grant of 237 copies of the "The Animal World", for distribution among
the Schools in Cork, the Secretary had been requsted by the Committee to see it properly carried out."
