Reader Review
The best Yoga book Ever, August 29, 2002
Reviewer: An Amazon.com Customer from MD
David Swenson's Ashtanga Yoga is the very best yoga book
I have ever seen. While there are other books out there
that are good, this one is excellent. The book is hard
covered and seems to be very long wearing. The spine is
spiral bound and lays flat, which is excellent when you
are trying to reference the book and go through your yoga
practice at the same time. The pictures are excellent and
show as much as a book possibly could (of course a video
or live instructor is always better). Each pose is well
described, with steps laid out clearly for getting into
and out of the pose. The book begins with a description
of the principles of ashtanga yoga and then goes through
the warm up, standing series, beginners series, and
intermediate series. It also includes several versions of
a practice from 15 min, to 2 hours. Even if you do not
practice ashtanga yoga, this book is really an excellent
reference for any yoga practicioner. I highly recommend
it.

Review
This is the best book on Ashtanga Yoga I have
come across., February 20, 2001
Reviewer: Philippe Alexis from
Mountain View, California
John Scott goes into great detail to talk about yoga
theory, especially the Ahstanga breath, and the internal
locks used through the practice. It is the first book I
have seen which explains the difficult vinyasa
transitions is such a lucid manner, using full color
photographs to illustrate each subtlety. Another
outstanding feature is that John takes you through how to
enter and exit each posture step by step, breath by
breath. I have been doing Ashtanga yoga for five years,
and this book has helped me greatly in my own practice
and as a teacher. I cannot recommend this book highly
enough to students of all levels. Thank you for this
beautiful work John Scott!

I found this one to be extremely informative &
practical and thankfully free from the cliched vagueness
of some other books I have read. It contains very clear
photos and detailed instructions for each pose/sequence
along with the benefits of each pose. The introduction
talks about the origins of yoga, the 8 limbs, etc and
basically how to get the best out of your practice (touching
on routine, diet, etc). Probably best suited for
individuals who have already been introduced to yoga (at
any level).

Book Description
Ashtanga is the most dynamic form of yoga around, and now
you can enjoy all its benefits--including increased
flexibility, improved strength, and enhanced calm. From
beginning sun salutations, through standing and seated
postures, to the finishing positions, these pictures
guide your body while the captions instruct you on proper
breathing. One spread, for example, takes you smoothly
through a forward bend into the basic "downward dog"
posture, finally ending on the ground with a stretched
out, arched back "cobra." You won't miss out on
a single segment of the motion.

Reader Review
A wonderful book I have used in my yoga teaching
for 14 year, March 21, 1999
Reviewer: A reader from Georgia, USA
Baba Hari Dass is a silent yogi who communicates via a
chalk board. He is very straight forward and to the point
and does not waste words. The book opens up flat so you
can look at the wonderful pictures of the poses. It has a
great introduction that includes all the limbs of
Ashtanga (8 limbed) yoga. If it has a fault it is that
Baba Hari Dass would hav you doing 2 to 3 hours of yoga
practices a day if you followed his regimen, not very
realistic for Americans.
