Book Description
Yoga came to Tibet from India more than a thousand years
ago, and it was quickly absorbed into the culture's rich
traditions. In this small book readers will discover
Heart Yoga, which developed over the centuries in the
Gelukpa tradition of the Dalai Lamas. The program
presented here combines popular yoga exercises wtih
special Tibetan poses, and methods of working from the
inside to give a healthy and a happy heart.
Roach discovered a number of previously unknown Tibetan
works on yoga in the course of his ongoing efforts to
find and preserve ancient Tibetan Buddhist texts. He
discusses the ideas and insights presented in these texts
and places them within the context of the Buddhist
tradition. To help readers incorporate this ancient
wisdom in their daily lives, he provides a specific
regime of yoga postures and meditations. Combining
instructive illustrations with the unique philosophical
underpinnings of the Buddhist approach, Geshe Roach has
created a unique program for yoga on a physical and
spiritual level.
About the Author
MICHAEL ROACH is a fully ordained Buddhist monk and has
been a teacher of Buddhism since 1981. He was the first

Book Description
This exceptional work of scholarship is the work of the
scholar who brought the world The Tibetan Book of the
Dead and an equally important work entitled Tibet´s
Great Yogi Milarepa. This book, perhaps the most valuable
in the trilogy, exposes the deeds of some of the
principal yogas and meditations which many of the most
illustrious Tibetan and Indian philosophers, including
Tulopa, Naropa, Marpa, and Milerepa, employed in
attaining Right Knowledge.

Synopsis
Books, audiotapes, and classes about yoga are today as
familiar as they are widespread, but Westerners have only
recently become engaged in the meditative doctrines of
the East - only since the 1920s, in fact. In the early
part of the 20th century, it was the pioneering efforts
of keen scholars like W.Y. Evans-Wentz, the late editor
of this volume, that triggered the West's ongoing
occidental fascination with such phenomena as yoga, Zen,
and meditation. This companion to the "Tibetan Book
of the Dead" is a collection of seven authentic
Tibetan yoga texts that first appeared in English in 1935.
In these pages, amid photographs and reproductions of
yoga paintings and manuscripts, readers will encounter
some of the principal meditations used by Hindu and
Tibetan gurus and philosophers throughout the ages in the
attainment of Right Knowledge and Enlightenment. Special
commentaries precede each translated text, and a
comprehensive introduction contrasts the tenets of
Buddhism with European notions of religion, philosophy
and science. This book is intended for general readers
interested in Tibet and Tibetan Buddhism, and students
following courses on Eastern religions or Buddhism.
Reader Review
Ancient but useful., October 23, 2000
Reviewer: Meryl Reis from

W.Y.Evans-Wentz travelled extensively in the far east and
wrote several books about Tibetan Buddhism. He writes
with a great combination of scholarship and passion for
the religion. Having met 'remarkable men' throughout
India and elsewhere, he has a tendency to blend Buddhism
and Hinduism together. Those who have travelled to India
or Nepal have seen this blending, and a student of
history notes Buddhism's firm roots in Hinduism. In this
book, Evans Wentz gives good translations of exotic
Tibetan Buddhist texts. Anyone looking for the roots of
modern mystical fiction like Carlos Castaneda will find
them here. Explained are the procedures of producing
'Psychic Heat', projecting consciousness into animals,
and being aware of the dream state. This is a great book
to inspire the cautious beginner or to come back to after
practicing seated meditation for several years, because
there is practical advice on how to breath and keep your
back straight,as well as deeper meditations. One might
ask, "How did the powers that be ever let this kind
of information be put into print?", as a lot of it
is extremely esoteric and possibly unadvisable for
beginning practitioners.
Be sure to read the author's wonderful introduction and
extensive footnotes, which help to weave a story about
spirituality, both Eastern and Western.

An Excellent Guide to Tibetan Bon Buddhist
Practice, May 29, 2002
Reviewer: Nicq MacDonald
(see more about me at Amazon.com)
from Sioux Falls, SD United States
After reading Sogyal Rinpoche's "Tibetan Book of
Living and Dying", I was intrigued by the practice
of "Dream Yoga", which, although mentioned and
discussed several times in Sogyal's book, was never
covered in any depth. "Living and Dying" didn't
include any instructions in the practice of this exercise
either, so I decided to look elsewhere. While glancing
through the Eastern Religion section of a local
bookstore, I stumbled upon this fine little volume.
Wangyal Rinpoche delivers more than a guide to the
practice of Dream Yoga- he delivers a guide to a complete
nondual practice. The book includes meditation
instructions, Guru Yoga and Dakini practices, breathing
instructions, a guide to basic Tibetan bioenergetics, a
little history of the Bon tradition, a brief introduction
to Tantra and Dzogchen, and even a glossary filled with
Tibetan and Sanskrit terms used throughout the book.
There is enough here to begin a spiritual practice beyond
dream yoga.
To the seeker looking for a guide to Tibetan mysticism,
look no further- "The Tibetan Yogas of Dream and
Sleep" is the perfect introduction.

Best 15 minutes spent either horizontally or
vertically, January 19, 2003
Reviewer: davek4570
from the MidWest
I am familiar with the benefits of Tai-Chi, Qi-Gong,
Meditation, Martial Arts, etc. Most take a couple of
years of training, and 1-3 hours a day of practice to
achieve the health benefits that these 6 exercises will
give in 10-15 minutes a day, and you'll start feeling the
benefit nearly immediately. At least I did. I'm 48 and
due to various debilities can't lift weights or do
violent exercises any more. I've done the rites now for
about 8 months and I can move pretty much pain free and
rapidly. I've benefited mentally and physically vastly
out of proportion to the apparent simplicity and brevity
of these exercises. I bugged my 70's something dad to try
them, and once he found out how much his energy and
strength levels improved, he now does the rites daily.
Mom is still trying to figure out what's going on, but
even she's impressed with dad's increased energy levels.
Remember, they will improve your physical and mental
condition, but the rites are not a cure-all. Buy the book(s)
and try them anyway.
