Book Description
In this revealing and instructional book, Christy Turlington shares her passion for yoga and the impact it has had on her life -- both personally and professionally.

According to a recent Time magazine cover story, 15 million Americans include some form of yoga in their fitness regimes -- nearly twice as many as five years ago. This healing art balances the mind with the body, incorporating physical strength with mental fitness to reach a place of deep, lasting peace, harmony, and happiness.

Christy Turlington discovered yoga at the age of 18 and has been a serious practitioner for 15 years. Lavishly illustrated and suited for practitioners of all levels, Living Yoga explores the eight tenets of yoga, including the various postures. Christy shows readers how to meditate and how to plan one's home according to vastu principles, and provides the names of yoga schools across the country. The book also includes beautiful photos of Christy in positions from basic to advanced. She discusses how to incorporate yoga into your everyday life -- no matter how busy you are -- and how yoga has made her own life more peaceful through stressful times and events.

"I was interested in cleaning my body on a deeper level. Yoga really purifies your organs and blood. You feel that circulation of energy. But the real lesson yoga gives you is learning how to be present."
--Christy Turlington

Designed in a practical, concealed Wire-O format that lays flat on the floor while being used, OM Yoga is organized in tabbed sections for each day of the week. Monday is devoted to the Sun Salutation to welcome the week’s start. Thursday’s practice focuses on sitting poses, when the week’s energy is dwindling. When joined together, each day’s recipe cultivates a yoga practice that is challenging, energizing, and restorative. Including sections on meditation, breathing, and do-it-yourself yoga “recipes” for all levels, OM Yoga: A Guide to Daily Practice creates the possibility for a meaningful yoga practice in the privacy of the home.

Very Easy To Use!, October 16, 2002
Reviewer: An Amazon.com Customer from Elkhart, IN United States
I took classes, but those tend to be expensive on a budget for a family of five. I checked this out from my library before buying it. Even without classes this book would be easy to use. What's even better is my kids (5 and 3 yrs. old) decided to join me!

This book is simply outstanding, May 6, 1999
Reviewer: An Amazon.com Customer from Bath, England
I am a former endurance athlete struggling with weight gain and back pain. I was given this book by a concerned friend. I thumbed through it, admired the exceptional quality, and placed it on my coffee table. When I could not even go for a long walk without pain, I started using the book, first choosing postures to address my spine. The benefits have been essentially immediate. It is well organized, light-hearted, and has proved to be a wonderful gift, indeed.

Yoga for Dummies proves that this 5,000-year-old Indian discipline can be all things to all people--the athlete striving for more-limber limbs, the stressed-out professional needing mental calm, peace, and clarity; the pregnant mom-to-be looking to keep herself toned and her emotions balanced, the spiritual seeker wanting to access the higher planes of consciousness.

Georg Feuerstein, Ph.D., and Larry Payne, Ph.D., are internationally recognized yoga experts. After explaining how to prepare your body and mind for yoga--including warnings about how to practice safely--they jump straight into the postures (asanas), instructions for which make up the meat of book (relaxation, breathing, movement, sequencing, compensation, sitting). Feuerstein and Payne carefully and in great detail lead the reader through every step, although they do advise first-timers to supplement the book with actual classes until they have the basics down. Throughout the book, clear explanations accompany black-and-white photos and drawings. (Unfortunately, following the written instructions is hard enough when your feet are in the air or your head's down by your ankles, and the book would have been improved if the pictures always appeared on the same page as their instructions.)

Readers then learn about tailoring a yoga program to their needs; using props; practicing "Yoga Throughout the Day"; incorporating yoga into sex, meditation, menopause, and pregnancy; using yoga to treat back problems and PMS; and practicing yoga with kids. The book also covers yogic ethics, philosophy, and resources. It's not all asanas and pranas, though--Yoga for Dummies is sprinkled with the humor characteristic of the For Dummies series (a section explaining that the ego is the ultimate source of stress is titled "Wherever ego, I go") and practical advice (the Forgiving Limbs maneuver allows you to bend your legs and arms a bit rather than try to fully extend them, so that you can perform postures you're not yet quite limber enough for). This is both an excellent beginner's guide and a good reference for more advanced yoginis who want a brush-up course. -- Stefanie Durbin

Reader Review
The Best Beginners Book, July 18, 2001
Reviewer: A reader from Maryland
I think this book is a great way to start yoga. It starts out very basic compared to some books which I have seen who call themselves basic(even easier than one of the books for seniors I have seen). One of the reasons I chose this book, is because the pictures, they are all clear and large and in color. I also enjoy the descriptions they give of how each pose will benefit you. ...they should include some more information about using props, since the do also mention that you should have props to start. However the book is not hurt buy that so much, becuase they do offer easier options for people with certain troublespots, and most beginners do not have all the props(in my case). I think this book will last me a long time because of the fact that it not only has a beginner section but also an intermediate to challenge me. I have really enjoyed learning yoga from this book, and I believe that it has really helped me to do the poses correctly with out any outside help. I really believe that this is one of the best yoga books out there, especially because everyone can benefit from these wonderful pictures, that show you step by step how to get into a pose(they also give you a written discription). I really encourage people who are just starting yoga to buy this book, because it has really enthused me about yoga and helped me in every aspect of my life.

FANTASTIC Book, February 13, 2003
Reviewer: A reader from North Texas, United States
This is a fabulous book! Great for those with Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS/CFS) or possibly others who have cognitive disabilities. Very simple to use. Straight-forward, list-driven instructions on one page; great photo of the pose on the page facing the instructions. Really easy to use - which is great for those who get overwhelmed by too many words! 'nuff said! ;-)
